Chapter 315: Forgive Me, For I Have Sinned

"You all should leave. Take those ox carts and go home," Xion said, tossing a lighter into the goblet.

The flame roared to life as it touched the crimson.

The blood-soaked tongue, bloated and grotesque, thrashed against the metal rim, shrieking in agony as the flames started to devour it.

A sickening sizzle filled the air.

The people could only watch in stunned silence.

Some had still clung to hope that Saintess Talia would explain. Maybe this was all a misunderstanding? But now, watching that thing burn, they finally accepted the truth.

She had nothing to say at all.

A few bold ones inched toward the exit with wary, darting eyes. And the crowd slowly followed behind them.

Orren, half-laughing in disbelief that he was still alive, sat on the cold floor.

"Old man, you should leave too," Xion said gently while motioning to the doors. "I hope you live a happy life with your son."

Orren shakily pulled himself to his feet. He opened his mouth to thank Xion when something cracked.

A sound like stone grinding against stone tore through the chamber.

Xion froze. And so did everyone else in the vicinity.

The towering statue behind them, which should have been just a lifeless stone, moved.

Its fingers twitched. With a slow, stomach-turning creak, the neck of the statue turned around, locking its empty maw directly onto them.

"No..." Xion whispered, spinning around.

But it was too late.

Its massive arms reached forward like a striking serpent, and in one clean, swift movement, it snatched Orren.

"Ah!!!"

Orren didn’t even have time to scream when the stone jaws inched closer. With a sickening crack, it revealed rows of jagged, bloodstained teeth as they clamped down hard.

Crunch.

Orren’s torso vanished in a single bite. The second morsel took away his legs. Bones and all.

Blood rained across Xion’s face, soaking him in red.

That was the moment before the chaos erupted.

Screams tore through the crowd like wildfire. People ran, slamming into one another, hammering fists against the heavy doors.

But the guards, still under the lingering effects of Talia’s manipulation, stood in their way. They blocked all the small exits with their swords, tossing the people back inside the hall.

The scent of blood, sweat, and fear thickened the air. Even grown men cried.

A guttural sound tore through the throat of the statue before it lunged for the small child in tattered robes.

Xion watched in horror as another life was taken away. It was then a sweet voice rang in his ears.

"I didn’t expect you to have the same blessing as me."

Talia stood tall. Her golden hair was untouched, and her robe was unsoiled as if the mass murder around her had nothing to do with her at all.

She smiled, tilting her head like a curious cat examining a bird with clipped wings.

"You silenced me. Clever. But I have plenty of sacrifices still. I will spare you if you join me, Xion. We can rule this world together."

She stretched out her hand like it was a divine gift, asking him to kiss it as one would to pledge their loyalty.

"Grief eats us both. The only difference is that I’ve made peace with it. And you are still too naive," she cooed. "We’re the same, Xion. You just haven’t accepted it yet."

Xion snarled, "You and I are nothing alike. You’re disgusting!"

With a heavy push, he threw the bloodstained blanket at her smug face before turning away. He didn’t want to spare even a glance at her.

’System,’ he yelled in his mind, ’summon the Level 3 combustion core.’
