Kellen got to speak with Gwen on the fourth day. It was normally something that wouldn’t be allowed, but Kellen knew that half of it was because of what he had told Rhys, while the other half was because of who she was as a person.
Gwen wasn’t the kind of person to rub this treatment in someone else’s face. She also appeared to be able to get along with everyone and anyone she spoke to.
It was originally a surprise for Kellen, since he was in a meeting with Sergei, Hill, Brent, Rhys, Miro and Casper about the developments involving the gate. Kellen didn’t even think anything of it, since everyone who was on the front lines was in one frame, and everyone else was beside Kellen.
He didn’t even register until she walked into frame, all smiles.
"Hey bro!" She called, an infectious, wide grin on her face that had Kellen immediately going from his serious work persona into his more relaxed older brother stance.
"Gwen. What are you doing here? Don’t you know you don’t have the clearance for being in this tent?" Kellen said, glancing at the other members in the tent. Brent was giving him a look like he was a damn idiot, but Kellen couldn’t help himself. That was going to be his first concern because it was true.
She didn’t have clearance to be in that tent, nor did she have the clearance to know what was going on. Gwen’s grin didn’t falter. She knew her brother, after all, and wasn’t upset by what he said. She sighed, wrapping her arm around Brent’s shoulders and neck, resting on him.
"Come on Kellen, as if I wouldn’t be here without special permission. Don’t you miss me? Love me? Want to see me? Come on, I’m your only flesh and blood, and it isn’t as if you or Rhys can carry a baby to term, so I’m your only option if you want to have kids who resemble you." Kellen’s jaw fell open as his eyes widened. Rhys fell over in a fit of laughter while Gwen smiled smugly at the screen.
Hill raised her hand, and Gwen slapped it, the sound echoing through the speakers.
"Are you kidding me? That’s when you bring this up for the first time?" Kellen reached up, rubbing the bridge of his nose while Gwen shrugged.
"Sure. We’ll go with it being the first time." She said, winking at Kellen. It was certainly the first time Kellen had heard about it, unless Rhys was hiding things from him. From the way he was laughing, it probably was the first time. He would have been more composed if Gwen had brought it up before.
At least, Kellen was pretty sure.
Sighing, Kellen just shook his head and turned his gaze to Hill and Brent. Both were grinning. Even Sergei’s lips were tilted up slightly as he glanced at Gwen.
"She’s not quite like you at all, Guide Kellen. You should have told me there was another creature in existence who could handle the front lines as well as you have." Well that felt like a little bit of a slap. Kellen didn’t ’handle the front lines well’ when he’d first gotten there. That was part of the privilege of being part of a Guild and going to the front lines.
Granted, Kellen had done that to himself. He could have joined a Guild and done what he wanted to do. Probably with the Nemesis Guild since they had always been active on the front lines. Sergei didn’t show it, but he was the same age as Rhys, but had come into his own power a little earlier.
Kellen would guess it was because his powers were a little more normal than Rhys’ powers. That was probably why the D.E.C. hadn’t minded giving him a Guild before Rhys. Rhys had also probably earned them a lot of money. Kellen didn’t want to brag, but Rhys was pretty good looking.
Not that Sergei wasn’t, but Kellen was incredibly biased. And Uncle Tom was a power hungry asshole. It could have been one of many things.
"Well, we do take after our Dad." Kellen said rather sagely and Gwen let out a peel of giggles.
"Mom would be pissed to hear that from you." She said and Kellen knew it was true. He shrugged and that sent Gwen off on another peel of giggles. Hill tsked.
"Don’t make your Mom sad. She’s a nice lady." She lectured and Brent nodded. freёwebnovel.com
