In the villa in the suburbs, Layla stared at Dan and Sarah, who sat before her. 

Helplessly, she said, “It’s not that I don’t want to help you. You know that my company is bankrupt 

right now. 

“Eddy won’t allow me to get involved in anything related to the company anymore. I don’t leave 

the house much now either, so I truly can’t help you.” 

To be honest, Layla simply didn’t want to see Eddy. 

She had suffered a loss of a hundred million dollars. Even though people thought he was a good 

man for helping her settle her problem, she knew he was pissed off for real this time. 

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have gone without talking to her for such a long time. 

Naturally, she was anxious and wanted to see him to ease things between them.

Sarah’s expression changed the moment Layla finished her sentence. “But you told us that you 

would help us! The trial is going to start soon. How could you break your promise?”

Do you really think that I want to help you? I just didn’t want Caroline to have her way!” 

“You-” Sarah yelled. 

Layla then sneered. “Dan was Evans Group’s CEO back then. He had full control over our family’s 

finances, but times have changed.” 

“Caroline managed the company really well, so everyone’s fawning over her. I can tell you now 

that you can’t climb back to your positions anymore.” 

Layla continued, “This is all your fault. If you hadn’t embezzled funds, the Harpers wouldn’t have 

been able to sue you.” 

Sarah was so furious that she started trembling. “You weren’t like this before! You said that you 

would treat us as if we were your parents! How could you treat us like this?”

“I only said that so that I could become the CEO,” Layla admitted. 

“Who would want to have parents like you two? I wouldn’t want you to become my parents, even if God sent you to me!” 

“You-” Sarah looked ready to pounce on Layla, but Dan held her back.

After calming down, he turned to Layla and said, “Layla, you can’t judge others purely based on the situation they’re currently in.” 

Layla furrowed her brows, annoyed. 

She was about to snap at them and tell them to stop when Dan said, “Caroline may be Evans 

Group’s CEO right now, but who said I don’t have the means to kick her out of that position?” 

For a moment, Layla seemed as if she bought it. Soon, though, she laughed. “Did you really think 

that I would believe you? If you were able to do that, why would you let her become the CEO in the first place?” 

“You don’t believe me, I see.” 

Dan sat on the couch and said, “I’m sure you know that Evans Group is a family business. The CEO 

has to be a person from our family. 

“I know that.” 

“So what if the current CEO doesn’t share our blood?” Dan spoke clearly and slowly. 

Sarah’s expression shifted when she heard what he said. She nudged him to remind him of the 

gravity of the matter, yet he continued staring right into Layla’s eyes. 

Layla straightened her back, her eyes wide open in disbelief. 

A moment later, she shook her head. “That’s impossible. You’re lying, right?” 

“No, I’m not lying to you. Caroline isn’t my daughter. I picked her up somewhere outside.”
