Kirk couldn’t resist it when he saw Caroline pout. Still, he managed to hold himself back with his last ounce oí rationality. 

“I can’t accompany you there, darling,” he told her. 

“I have something important to attend to on that same day.” 

“What’s so important? What’s more important than me?” Caroline turned away from him so that her back faced him, her lower lip protruding as she sulked. 

She had hoped against hope that she could introduce him to everyone during the handover ceremony. Alas, Kirk just wouldn’t give in. She was so mad at him for it. 

Then, Kirk put an arm around her waist and nuzzled her neck. In his low and raspy voice, he muttered, “Naturally, everything about you is most important to me.” 

“But I hope that the ceremony will go perfectly. I don’t want to ruin it and make you regret anything later on,” he added. 

“You not attending it will be my greatest regret!” Caroline was fuming already. 

Kirk stared at her and found himself at a loss for words. 

Noticing this, Caroline murmured, “Sorry. I was being too harsh on you. I didn’t mean it. I just hope that you can show up on such a significant day for me.” 

She continued, “Besides, I want the world to know you. I want them to know just how wonderful of a person you are. You aren’t anything like what they say!” 

Kirk lowered his eyes to look at her. “What did they say?” 

It was Caroline’s turn to fall silent. Those people’s comments were much too horrible. She didn’t want to tell Kirk about it at all. 

“Tell me about it.” Kirk carried her, sat down, and made her sit on his lap. 

“Tell me.” 

“Nope.” Caroline buried her face in his chest and pretended as if she didn’t know a single thing 

about what she had just said.

Amused, Kirk chuckled His coarse fingers brushed against her waist as he lowered his voice and said, “Why?”

Moments later, he heard the sound of her even breathing. Looking down, he saw that she had indeed fallen asleep, and he breathed a sigh of relief. 

Finally, the matter of attending the handover ceremony had been dealt with. He picked up his phone and scanned his call history. 

Three days had passed since the bank had made the announcement. Yet Eddy still hadn’t contacted him. How strange.
