Naomi took a bite of food and shrugged. “Chloe isn’t dumb. She wouldn’t do something that stupid.”

It took one to know one. Chloe wasn’t the type to resort to sneaky moves.

That way, nobody could hold anything against her, and she would always be able to play the role of the

innocent one. 

Brendan remained silent. He walked over to the dining table and sat down next to Naomi.

Since she had been a child, Naomi had never liked chili powder or vegetables. But those ingredients were

always in the food sold outside.

Seeing Naomi avoiding some of her food because of that, Brendan poured her a cup of water and took

the vegetables

“If the taste still lingers, you could rinse it away with water.”

Naomi smiled at Brendan’s gesture. “You’re so caring. You even remember the smallest details.”

Brendan said flatly, “I’ve known you for 23 years.

Naomi’s smile widened and she playfully nudged him under the table with her foot. “I won’t make a fool out of you tonight. I’ll make sure you enjoy it.”

Brendan didn’t buy it. “Cut the crap.”

She had strung him along just to have him hanging. He wouldn’t trust her about that again. She could say goodbye to being a mother too.

“I’m not pulling your leg,” Naomi said. “I still want to be a mom.”

Brendan huffed. “Eat your food.”

Naomi persisted, “I’ve got stuff to do this afternoon. I’ll head back to the law firm later, Get someone to handle those expense reports for me.”
