Aiden was on the call with Jason. When he heard the door of his office opening, he presumed Emyr had entered. However, seeing Arwen sitting there with her brows furrowed at him, he couldn’t help but be slightly stunned.
"When did you come?" he asked, already getting up to walk to her.
Arwen shook her head and simply replied, "Right when you were very busy on the call. I came in and didn’t feel it right to disturb you." She paused briefly before repeating her question from before. "Over the call, you sounded like you were looking for someone. Who are you looking for?"
Aiden’s expression shifted. His brows that have just eased moments ago seeing her, furrowed again. He didn’t answer her, instead walked her side before sitting on the same couch beside her.
Then turning to look at her, he said, "Someone who dared to harm me in a way I would never tolerate."
"Harm you?" Arwen repeated, before letting her gaze scan him head to toe. "Are you hurt somewhere? Did you go to the hospital?" She asked, already grabbing his hand, ready to leave at once.
But before she could tug him up, he pulled her in his arms, making her crash into his embrace.
"I am not hurt," he said gently, the voice rumbling through his chest, making Arwen calm instantly. She, herself, hadn’t realized how panicked she had gotten just at the mention of him getting harmed.
His hands slowly caressed her back, helping her ease. "There is no need to go to the hospital. I am fine. Nothing happened to me."
Arwen heard his heartbeat close to her ears and it worked like a tranquilizer. "You are fine?" she asked to confirm, pulling away from his arms to look into his eyes.
Aiden nodded. At which, she then asked, "Then why did you say that someone harmed you?"
"They harmed me ten years back and I didn’t realize it until recently," he slowly said, his eyes darkening with an emotion that could make anyone dread and flinch, yet Arwen was sitting all fine, her eyes not showing any hint of fear. "And now that I have come to know about it, I can’t let them slide away unharmed. They would have to take the consequence of their actions from the past."
"Does it still hurt?" she asked. She didn’t know what pain in the past he suffered, but there was no way she would let him endure the same pain now with her by his side.
Aiden could read her eyes. And when he saw her affected, he shook his head. "It does sometimes, but with you in my life, it has gotten bearable. It doesn’t hurt as much as before."
She felt he was comforting her, otherwise, there was no way the pain from the past could still be seen so obvious in his eyes. But since he said that she had made it bearable for him, she decided to accept it as a responsibility.
Cupping his cheek, she said, "Then whenever you feel the pain, remember to let me know. I will make sure to be with you."
Her words made the time slow down for them. They stared into each other’s eyes and let each other feel each other’s presence. After a brief while, Arwen realized what she was there for, and she acted quickly.
