Violet forgot to cry. The hurt and worry in her eyes from moments ago vanished, replaced by suspicion and guardedness.

She couldn’t meet his gaze, her eyes darting nervously. “Silas, why are you suddenly asking me this?”

“I feel like I’ve forgotten so much,” he replied quietly. “I can’t even remember how we became a couple.”

Violet gripped his arm, anxious and tight. “If you can’t remember, then maybe it’s better not to dwell on it. The past and the present—does it really make a difference?”

He gave a faint smile. “If you don’t tell me what happened before, how am I supposed to know if it makes a difference or not? Good or bad, I want to know it all, Violet. I can accept anything, but I can’t just muddle through life like a fool, pretending nothing matters.”

Violet stared at him, knowing this day would come sooner or later.

She sat up a little straighter, her features softening. “Silas, we first met back in college. I was studying psychology at Blue Ridge University, over in Veracoria. There was a grad student in my department—he was your friend, and you used to drop by to see him. The more I saw you, the more I noticed you.”

She gave a small, rueful smile. “Honestly, at first, it was just because you were good-looking. But over time, my feelings changed. I became this hopeless fangirl, always looking out for you. I knew you liked red wine, that you were great at fencing and horseback riding, and that you hated the smell of perfume.”

“That’s why, every time I knew I might run into you, I never put on perfume. But did you know? Every one of those ‘accidental’ encounters—I planned them all, down to the last detail. But you never noticed me.”

She paused, eyes filling with tears as the memories surfaced.

Silas, unable to recall any of it, struggled to empathize. He gently pressed a tissue into her hand. “So, how did we end up together?”
