Ines was patiently scrolling through until she found an unfamiliar number at the bottom. This number had no note on Leila's phone, and it had been dialed in soon after Ethan stopped his behavior.
"Did anyone else know about Ethan's habit of frequently calling the deceased during that time, besides you?" Ines looked at Lucas.
Lucas pondered for a moment, and replied, "The whole Meyer family was in chaos at that time. But Mr. Meyer seemed pretty chill in front of his family, so probably none of the Meyers knew about it. If anyone knew, it might be Mr. Noel. Because he was often drinking with Ethan at that time, sometimes even personally driving him home."
Ines glanced at the number on the call history and asked again, "Has Noel changed his phone number in recent years?"
Lucas replied, "Not as far as I know. He and Ethan haven't changed their numbers for years. After all, they're big shots, and they wouldn't change their numbers just like that. Plus, I know both of Mr. Noel's numbers, and neither is this one."
"Is this number a personal number of Leila's?" Ines asked. People like them usually had both work and personal numbers.
Lucas replied, "Yes. Only a few people knew this number of Leila's."
Ines said, "That makes sense. The owner of this number could be someone who knew Leila's number and hadn't deleted it, or someone who stole it." Ines had a hunch already. Besides Silvia, there wouldn't be anyone else capable of such a thing.
Lucas looked a bit lost. Just when he was about to ask again, Ines said, "Lucas, give the phone to Ethan and let him look at the call history. He'll know what to do."
Doubted a woman's intuition? Then she would provide him with evidence this time, and see what he had to say.
Lucas nodded and said, "Alright." However, he couldn't help but explain again, "Ma'am, I want to clarify something. This whole mess is totally my bad. Ethan has asked me to handle this issue a long time ago, but I screwed up. I've been with Ethan for many years, and I can vouch for his sincerity towards you. Even back in the day with Leila, he didn't put in as much effort as he does now with you."
The old Ethan was pretty decent to Leila, but he was not as attentive as he was with Ines now. No matter what Ines wanted, Ethan would immediately call Lucas. His most frequent job as a secretary these days was shopping.
Just yesterday morning, he was sent by Ethan to the countryside to buy free-range chickens, and he was told not to delay. Dressed in a suit, he drove out and brought back a bunch of live chickens. The country folks looked at him as if they were looking at a ghost. The weirdest part was, Ethan only wanted the chicken wings. Lucas had to send the rest of the chicken meat to others.
Later he found out that those chicken wings were for Ethan to marinate for Ines to eat. That was totally a shocker for him. He felt that his Mr. Meyer had become more and more unpredictable after getting married, almost like a perfect husband.
Ines smiled lightly, glanced at Lucas, and asked, "Lucas, when did you start lying?"
"Ma'am, I'm not bullshitting. Everything I said is true." Lucas said.
Ines raised an eyebrow, looked at her watch, and said to Lucas, "Lucas, it's work hours now. Are you sure you still want to hang around here?"
Lucas instantly snapped back to reality, and quickly excused himself, "You're right. I should go. If you have any questions, feel free to call me anytime."
With that, he left right away.
In Ines' impression, Lucas had always been a clever man who knew how to act and speak. She didn't expect him to have such a funny side. It seemed she didn't know him as well as she thought. Maybe what happened last night had scared him a bit.
After Lucas left, Silas came in. He looked at Ines with confusion, "What happened? Why did Lucas seem distracted and left in a hurry? This is totally unlike his usual style."
"Don't tell me you went to see Izzy." Ethan asked without lifting his head.
Although Lucas didn't want to admit it, he knew that Ethan seemed to have found some clues, so he could only nod, "Yes."
Ethan suddenly lifted his head, glaring at Lucas, "You're such a great secretary, always causing me trouble."
"I was only trying to explain to her. Only in this way can your innocence be proved." Lucas took the phone out of his pocket and handed it to Ethan.
Ethan looked at the pink phone in Lucas's hand, his eyes narrowing slightly, "The phone is still here, and you even showed it to Izzy?"
"Mr. Meyer, chill out. This phone is ancient. Even with the repairs, a lot of its features are kaput. I was right in front of Mrs. Meyer the whole time. She only checked the call history, nothing else." Lucas said.
"Why so uptight? I'm not accusing you of anything." Ethan said.
Lucas felt like he was close to cracking. This couple was a real pain in the neck. He was supposed to mediate their conflicts, but ended up pleasing nobody.
"Mrs. Meyer wanted me to give you this phone so you could check the call history yourself. Apparently, someone else has been calling her too." Lucas said.
Ethan started scrolling through the contact list. After Leila's death, he thought he was the only one who had been calling her. But as he scrolled, he froze. There was someone else who had called Leila. This was a curveball. And it happened after he had kicked his own messed up habits. Ines probably meant for him to dig up who this mystery caller was.
