Erica didn't utter a word, she was just staring at the operating room. Trenton remained silent too, both their gazes fixed on the ER door.
"Who knows what kind of hell this kid's been through to even think about offing herself. With Leila gone, and now this. Just how many disasters can one person handle?" their neighbor muttered, still shaken by the incident.
Time ticked by, slowly but surely. No one knew how long they waited until, finally, the ER door swung open from the inside. A doctor emerged, removing his face mask.
"Doc, how's the patient doing?" Erica asked, with urgency lacing her voice.
The doctor furrowed his brow, speaking formally, "Not great, I'm afraid. We've managed to stabilize her for now, but she isn't out of the woods yet. She needs to pull through the next couple of days to have a chance of waking up."
Trenton immediately latched onto the doctor's words. "What do you mean by 'a chance of waking up'? Are you saying even if she pulls through, she might not wake up?"
The doctor nodded. "That's the current situation. Prepare yourselves mentally for what's to come."
Erica stiffened slightly, watching as Silvia was wheeled into the ICU.
"Trenton, what if she doesn't wake up? This girl's too impulsive, choosing suicide just like that. It's a total curveball," Erica said, her voice filled with sorrow.
Trenton pulled Erica into a comforting embrace. "She chose this path. We can't change that. All we can do now is wait and see how her fate unfolds."
Ines had no clue if Ethan had fallen asleep. The man lay there with his eyes closed, completely still. She didn't get a wink of sleep that night. With no news from Erica at the hospital, all she could do was reassure herself that no news was good news. But around six in the morning, her phone buzzed. Just as she was about to answer it, Ethan beat her to the punch.
"Hello, Mom."
"Silvia's in ICU now. Whether she'll wake up depends on if she can pull through the next couple of days." Erica didn't ask Ethan to come over. She didn't want to influence her son's decision on this matter.
Ethan didn't say anything. Erica added, "I'll be here. Your father will have to get back to duty soon. If your grandpa asks, just tell him the truth. We can't hide this."
"Alright."
After hanging up, Ines asked, "How is she?"
Ethan replied flatly. "She's still alive."
Seeing his indifferent attitude, Ines didn't know what to say. She only asked, "Did you turn off your phone?"
Ethan nodded "The call came to my phone first last night. I didn't pick up, so they called Mom."
Ines didn't press further, seeing that Ethan didn't want to talk. With morning already in full swing, they got ready and headed downstairs.
Phillip was already up, seemingly ready for a morning jog. Seeing them, he couldn't help but ask, "Ethan, your parents are both out. Did something happen last night?"
