Actually, after hearing Jake's words last night, Ines felt quite upset, and Ethan was equally uneasy. He carefully recalled every moment he spent with Ines, and the more he thought about it, the more something felt off. The coincidences he'd always thought were just that - coincidences - were becoming too frequent. Ines and Leila shared the same interests, and sometimes their personalities even seemed identical.
And there was what Beasley said, when he saved her back in the day, she wasn't breathing. As he said, he was an all-rounder special forces guy. So even though he was severely wounded at the time, the chance of a mistake was very slim.
Where did things go wrong?
At the moment, he couldn't describe how he felt, afraid that there might be a connection between them that shouldn't exist. How would he explain to Ines then? Would Ines believe what he said?
"Mr. Meyer, you wanted to see me."
"Lucas, go back to the hospital where Ines was admitted after her car accident years ago. I need all her detailed medical records."
"Is something wrong?" Lucas asked, feeling somewhat puzzled.
Ethan frowned, feeling he should get a second opinion, "Lucas, do you think Ines and Leila have similarities?"
Seeing the serious look on Ethan's face, Lucas knew the problem could be serious. After thinking for a moment, he replied, "I haven't had much contact with Ines, so I'm not sure. But Ines and Leila give a similar vibe, both seem a bit aloof and quiet. Other than that, I can't see any commonalities."
Seeing that Ethan didn't respond, Lucas added, "Mr. Meyer, I'm not sure what problems you're facing, but I want to say that what's past is past, don't dwell on it. Cherishing the people around you is what's most important."
Ethan nodded, rubbed his temples with a weary hand, unusually not flaring up but just saying lightly, "Go on, then." Maybe he was overthinking this.
Just as Lucas was about to leave, he heard Ethan say, "You put aside your work for now and head to the hospital. I need to know the results ASAP."
"Alright, I'm on my way." Lucas agreed.
The hospital where Ines was treated years ago was a public hospital, still in operation, and kept good records of patients' medical history. As Ines' husband, it was easy to get the information. In the afternoon, Lucas brought back the medical records to the Meyer Group. Ethan looked through it carefully, found nothing unusual, and it matched what he already knew. The main injury Ines had sustained was to her head, and the rest were skin injuries. She had indeed been in a coma for a while and hadn't undergone any major surgeries. The theory of a connection with Leila wasn't valid.
Ethan then made a call to Beasley, who seemed to be in the middle of training, the background noise was quite loud. "Beasley, I'm not disturbing you, am I?"
"My team's taking a break. It's all good. Something wrong at home?"
Ethan asked the question again in a troubled tone, "I want to confirm once more, when you saved Izzy back then, had she really stopped breathing?"
There was a brief pause on Beasley's end, "Ethan, I've also thought about this later on. There's a medical condition known as a false death state, which is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain. It mainly manifests as extremely weak vital signs such as breathing, heartbeat, pulse, and blood pressure, which can't even be detected through conventional methods. From the outside, it may appear as if the person has died, but in reality, they are still alive. Initially, I only used my hands to feel, without using any instruments, so a misjudgment is highly possible."
Ethan was aware of this, he just hadn't thought of it because he was agitated.
