Ethan had never seen Ines in such a state before. She was so weak. Her eyes were tightly closed, and her face was pale. It was a stark contrast to her usual pretty face.
The sight of her in such a condition made the air around Ethan seem intense. Tears welled up in his eyes and uncontrollably dripped onto the back of Ines’ hand.
He sniffed, gently lifted Ines’ hand to his lips, and softly kissed on it. Ines always felt Ethan’s hands were beautiful and she often played with them. Actually, her hands were also beautiful. Her fingers were soft to touch. Every time he held her small hand, his heart would involuntarily soften. It was a beautiful and amazing feeling. Ethan managed to squeeze out a small smile. There was an evident guilt in his voice, “Izzy, I’m sorry. I was careless yesterday. I really should be more careful. If I was more vigilant, you wouldn’t be in this condition. Please wake up. You can be mad at me, you can do whatever you want, but please don’t lie here so still. It hurts my heart to see you like this.”
Ines didn’t have any enemies. The only people he could think of who would want her to be harmed were Silvia and Russel.
Silvia even could leave her own sister to die. Surely she would dare to do anything!
Without further thought, Ethan was certain they were behind this. “Izzy, do you remember? We had plans to take our kids for their vaccinations this morning. Our kids are so adorable, always up to mischief and adorable antics. Normally around this time, they will drink the breast milk. The little one, Ivy, will surely be up to no good since she’ll miss her feeding. She can be lazy, but when it comes to food, she’s serious. I think she’ll grow up to be a foodie, just like you.”
The woman on the bed didn’t respond. Only the machines indicating signs of life beeped steadily. Each beep felt like a small hammer pounding on his heart. “Izzy, I said I will give you time to cool off, but can you not leave me like this? Without you, I can’t go on. I love your funny nature. I love that you call me Mr. Meyer. I love your pet names for me. I love the way you act like a spoiled child, the way you hug me from behind when I’m cooking, the way you sweet-talk me into letting you eat junk food, and the way you get jealous of the kids… Because of you, I’ve experienced jealousy, anger, despair, anxiety. You’ve make me know one man can have so many different emotions when he loves someone. And also one man can worry about his lover so much.”
Ethan’s mind flashed back to their moments together, and his expressions were fluctuating between smiles and solemn faces.
“I often feel there’s a divine plan. You are sent by heaven to save me. The time I’ve spent with you has been the happiest moments in my life. So my angel, you can’t leave me so easily, okay?
“I want to see you in a wedding dress, hold your hand solemnly in a church, and make promises to each other. I’ve been wanting to do these things for a long time. Will you give me the chance?”
……
“By the way, there’s something I haven’t told you. The Meyer family has produced three top students already. I believe our kids, Ivy and Ollie, have the potential too. You need to wake up soon so we can nurture them together.”
Outside the ICU, Erica and Ashley couldn’t hear what Ethan was saying, but they could see his facial expressions. Sometimes he was crying. Sometimes he was smiling. It would have been comical if the situation had not been so grim. Erica’s eyes welled up with tears, “Your brother has always been unlucky in love. I thought his luck finally came, but now this disaster is waiting for him.”
Ashley also felt choked up, hugging Erica’s shoulder, “Ines will get better, and they will be happy.”
