Broken Memories, Intertwined Hearts novel Chapter 453

The tax auditors had been at the Meyer Group for a full week, but they couldn’t find a single hint of tax evasion. All they could report were minor administrative errors that had no significant impact on the company.

“I’m sorry about all of this, Mr. Meyer,” Brandon, one of the auditors, said, with embarrassment on his face. Ethan, however, didn’t look pleased. He shot a mocking look at Brandon. “I hope that next time you receive such accusations, you’ll be more cautious. You guys barging into Meyer Group like this could give people the wrong idea. We’ll cooperate this time, but don’t expect us to do it every time. We’re running a business here, and you’ve caused us a great deal of inconvenience.”

The implication was clear: they had been friendly this time, but they might not be so cooperative in the future.

Brandon understood. His smile was turning stiff. “We’ll relay Mr. Meyer’s concerns to our superiors. And we’ll make a public statement about these unfounded accusations. We won’t let the Meyer Group’s reputation be tarnished.”

“Much appreciated, Brandon,” Ethan said. His face was expressionless.

“No problem, it’s part of our job,” Brandon replied, looking somewhat embarrassed.

After the auditors left, Ethan’s mood turned gloomy. Lucas didn’t dare to say a word. Finally, after a long silence, he spoke, “We figured out who the mole in the company is. It’s a junior manager from the finance department, and he gave evidence to the tax authority. Rory asked me to report it to you.”

“Fire him. Russel will only use someone like him once. There’s no point in keeping him,” Ethan said, sounding tired. Lucas nodded, but didn’t leave.

Ethan looked up at Lucas, guessing what was on his mind. “What is it, Lucas? Did you find something about the investigation I asked you to do?”

Lucas looked at Ethan cautiously before saying, “It’s as you suspected. The person who swapped the blueprints is Leila. She was one of your closest confidants. She copied your blueprints and gave it to those people. They then hired professionals to alter the design. She had many opportunities to swap the blueprints since she was close to Joy, who was also under a lot of pressure and didn’t check the blueprints again before passing them to the engineering department.”

When Ethan first voiced his suspicions, Lucas found it hard to believe. He had known Leila for many years and had a good grasp of her character. This didn’t seem like something she would do, especially since she was in love with Ethan at the time. Ethan’s eyes flashed with pain, and he rubbed his temples tiredly.

“Are you alright, Mr. Meyer?” Lucas asked.

“I’m fine. Did Leila do anything else that hurt the company?”

Lucas shook his head. “No, we haven’t found anything else.”

Upon hearing this, Ethan felt slightly relieved. “Keep investigating. I refuse to believe that Leila is capable of such a thing. There must be more to this story.”

Ethan still trusted Leila, a woman he once loved and cared for deeply. He didn’t believe she was capable of such a thing, or else he wouldn’t have been attracted to her in the first place. Perhaps she didn’t know that swapping the blueprints would lead to a loss of life. If she had known, she probably wouldn’t have done it. And she had paid the ultimate price—her life.
