Nolan had wanted to silence Cicely, but it was too late. As soon as she said those words, the entire living room went quiet. The tears on Silvia’s face froze. She looked at her mother in disbelief. Cicely’s face was filled with satisfaction, together with a hatred and disgust for Silvia that she could no longer hide. It was so blatant, like the last straw that broke her back. Her words became a nightmare that haunted Silvia’s life.
Silvia couldn’t hear the rest clearly. Her mind was in a mess.
Nolan was stunned by Cicely’s words too, but he recovered after a few seconds, angrily shouting at Cicely, “Cicely, why are you telling our child these things? She’s still so young. You’re affecting her growth!”
“You’re yelling at me! You’re yelling at me for this damned girl! I just couldn’t hold it in anymore. Can’t I vent my anger at her? Every time I see her, my heart hurt, but I have to pretend it’s nothing. I’ve been wearing this hypocritical mask for over ten years. I can’t do it anymore. I’ll go mad.”
Cicely ran into the bedroom and slammed the door shut. Nolan patted Silvia on the shoulder. “Silvia, don’t listen to your mom. She’s just angry. You’re daddy’s little princess. Daddy and your sister both love you.”
“But mommy hates me.” Silvia said softly.
“Your mom was just angry. She didn’t mean it. I’ll have her apologize to you later. Be good and sit on the couch for a while. I need to check on her.” Nolan, worried about his wife, comforted Silvia and knocked on the bedroom door. “Cicely, don’t do anything foolish. It’s been so many years. You need to be strong. What would we do if something were to happen to you? You can’t be so selfish. I understand your pain.”
Silvia stood still. After a final glance at the direction Nolan was in, she left the house pale-faced.
Nolan, completely absorbed in concern for Cicely, ignored Silvia. By the time he realized she was gone, she was nowhere to be found.
Silvia didn’t know where she was going. Her mother’s words echoed in her mind. When she finally stopped, she realized how sore her legs were.
It was already evening, and she was in a completely unfamiliar place. She didn’t recognize anyone around her. She wanted to ask someone for directions home, but remembering the recent events, she chose to remain silent.
She found an underpass and sat down. Then she closed her eyes, buried her head in her knees and let herself cry.
She thought dying would be a good thing. She wouldn’t have to face anyone, and she wouldn’t have to confront her unbearable past.
Unknowingly, Silvia fell asleep. When she woke up, it was completely dark. The underpass was deserted, but occasionally a few people would pass by. A sense of unprecedented panic surged in Silvia’s heart.
Not long after, she heard footsteps. She immediately looked up. A ragged homeless man was walking towards her, with a sinister smile on his face. “Little girl, can’t find your way home? I will take you home.”
