Ines couldn’t help but chuckle. Whenever Ethan skipped dinner at home, she always reminded him to eat, even though she sometimes found her own nagging tedious. Ethan, on the other hand, seemed to enjoy it, always responding with a mix of helpless and pleased expression.
This brought her joy. Often, that's the dynamic in relationships - one partner might be prone to nagging, while the other tolerates it willingly, each cherishing the other's habits.
“Alright, I won’t disturb you anymore. Come home early and remember to leave an umbrella in the car. It’s definitely going to rain tonight.”
“Got it, my dear wife.”
After ending the call with Ines, Ethan didn’t dawdle. He took his meal to the car. On his way, Ethan noticed that the recent heavy rain had caused some roadblocks in the outskirts, where the rain seemed to be heavier than in the city.
Suddenly, the car jolted, and Lucas grumbled, “That Russel must have done this on purpose, choosing such a place for the meeting. He must be plotting something.”
“He probably chose this place for that very reason,” Ethan mused, with a slight frown on his face, and his gut feeling was uneasy.
“This cunning old fox sure has a lot of tricks up his sleeve.”
Ethan rarely saw this side of Lucas and chuckled. “Lucas, did you inform your wife before coming here?”
“Of course, I did. If I didn’t tell her that I am going out for work with you, she might have already started bombarding me with calls. You know, women are hard to figure out. She seemed so independent before we got married, but after, she’s been clingy.” Lucas sighed.
His wife was gentle and virtuous, but she lacked full trust in him and always worried that he might be fooling around. His job as a secretary seemed glamorous, but it was demanding. He had to go through as many documents as Ethan, if not more. He had to scrutinize each one before handing them over to Ethan. He simply didn’t have the energy to mess around. Lucas had dated his wife for many years, unlike Ethan and Ines, who married after just one meeting. “So, you’re regretting now?”
Lucas chuckled. “Not really. I’m actually enjoying it. I’ve become accustomed to her checking up on me. If she doesn’t, I will get worried that something has happened to her.”
“Treasure her. She cares about you.”
“Haha.”
The two men chatted away, making the time fly by. They soon reached the mansion. As soon as they parked their car, Jacob arrived alone, looking as casual as always. As they had guessed, the garage was almost empty due to the cool weather.
“Jacob.” Ethan greeted.
Jacob patted his shoulder and the two exchanged a glance before proceeding inside. After giving their names, they were quickly led to the private room where Russel and Matthew were drinking tea.
