Broken Memories, Intertwined Hearts novel Chapter 493

Ines had grown accustomed to waiting for Ethan, no matter how late it got. Tonight was no different.

Under the warm glow of the room lamp, she had her long hair held carelessly with a hairpin. She was dressed in a simple silk nightgown. She was propped up against the headboard, reading a book, occasionally glancing at the two little ones who slept soundly on the bed. A soft smile played on her lips.

She couldn’t understand how she had evolved into this state, seemingly becoming weak, unlike her independent self back in B City. There, she could do anything alone.

Now, she always needed company when she was alone. When Ethan wasn’t around, she relied on the two little ones for company.

Outside, thunder roared and lightning flashed, but the little ones seemed oblivious, sleeping peacefully. Their breathing was steady.

Ines chuckled, caressing their little faces. “You two really are carefree, sleeping so soundly. Your dad hasn’t come back yet, but you don’t seem bothered.”

Of course, the little ones wouldn’t respond. They just slept on.

Noticing a trail of drooling on the little girl’s cheek, Ines carefully got off the bed, fetched a tissue, and gently wiped it off. “You’re all mischief when awake, but when asleep you’re just a little baby, drooling all over your face.”

Outside, the night was dark, and the storm was raging. The howling wind was all she could hear. Her heart was filled with unease, ajd she couldn’t resist calling Ethan. He picked up quickly, relieving Ines slightly.

“Ethan, where are you? Why aren’t you back yet?”

The familiar voice on the phone replied, “Izzy, don’t wait up for me. Go to sleep. We might be stuck here for a while. The rain has gotten pretty heavy. Lucas and I have parked the car and are planning to continue once the rain lightens.”

Ines furrowed her brows. “Where did you go?”

Ethan didn’t hide anything now that things were mostly settled. “Jacob, Lucas, and I went to see Russel at Oakwood Estate. But don’t worry. We’re fine. The situation is mostly under control. Silvia handed over the evidence herself, and the investigation has started. Russel will be arrested soon. Jacob is still at the mansion. Lucas and I are on our way back.”

Ines knew of Oakwood Estate. They used to vacation there during the summers. The roads were terrible, especially in this stormy weather. Her heart was filled with worry. “Why did you go there, especially in this weather? You should stay at the mansion. Why did you rush back?”
