The two little ones were particularly clingy tonight. Usually, they’d be asleep by now, but tonight they seemed unusually energetic. Izzy knew they missed her, so she patiently played with them.
Before they knew it, the trio had drifted off to sleep. They all breathed softly.
Erica, not entirely reassured, came to check on them. She found Izzy, snuggled up with the children, sleeping peacefully. Erica adjusted the air conditioner and tucked them all in before leaving the room.
Izzy, being a light sleeper, felt it when Erica entered the room. She didn’t open her eyes, but a single tear slipped from her eye.
The next morning, Izzy woke up to bright daylight. It was the first time she’d slept in for a while. She felt a weight on her body. Upon opening her eyes, she found Olivine sitting on her belly and Oliverio pressing against her legs. The siblings seemed to have mistaken her for a plaything.
“Ivy, Ollie, what are you doing? Let go of mommy,” Izzy laughed. Ivy flashed a toothy smile and raised her bottom, intending to sit back down. However, she lost her balance and fell straight onto Izzy, hitting her chin. Ivy burst into tears immediately, scaring Ollie who froze in place.
Izzy’s chin throbbed a little, but seeing Ivy crying, she quickly cradled her in her arms to soothe her. “Baby, you brought this upon yourself. Now stop crying, okay?”
“Dada,” Ivy sobbed. Her cries echoed in Izzy’s ears, making her heart feel like it was being squeezed. She tried to reassure Ivy, “Ivy, be good. Daddy will be back in a few days. He’ll come back sooner if you behave.”
“Dada, Dada,” Olivine’s calls for Ethan had become her instinctive response whenever she felt unhappy.
Izzy’s emotions, which she had been trying hard to control, collapsed again. She couldn’t help but cry softly. While mother and daughter cried together, Oliverio, seeing his mother and sister in tears, joined them.
