Micah instinctively looked at Freya. Her clear eyes radiated determination.
He knew she did not have the capability to orchestrate something like this, and he had already confirmed with Mr. Joker that it was just a local gang causing trouble.
Pressing his lips together, Micah spoke softly, "I believe you, but I don’t have feelings for you."
Freya’s expression remained resolute, undeterred by his words. "You keep saying that, Micah. I’ve already told you what I want."
A month was not a long time. But before Micah could respond, Freya gave a light laugh and spoke first, "Micah, I was willing to risk my life for you, and this is all you can offer in return?"
"You don’t need to use reverse psychology on me. The answer is still no."
Pretending to be her boyfriend for a month would mean the whole tribe would believe they were together. Breaking up later would only invite gossip and speculation. Something neither of them needed. It was better not to start at all.
Freya felt as if her heart was being squeezed by an invisible hand. She murmured, "Micah, are you really that heartless?"
She had put everything on the line, showing her commitment, yet Micah still refused to give her a chance.
Micah replied, "What happens after a month? When it’s over, how will people view you, or me?"
Freya's throat tightened, and her eyes welled up with tears. So, this was what he was worried about.
Steeling herself, she made a final offer, "If that’s what you’re concerned about, then after a month, I’ll create a scenario where it looks like I cheated. That way, no one will blame you. How about that?"
"It’s not reverse psychology, it’s the truth. You have no one else in your life, yet you keep rejecting me. We have no deep hatred, no insurmountable barrier. I’ve even offered to deal with any consequences, but you still won’t let me in."
Freya’s eyes filled with confusion and sorrow.
Micah sighed, "It’s not that you’re not good enough. It’s just that I have responsibilities. My father never remarried because he carried regrets."
None of the women around his father ever measured up to his mother. Over time, his father buried himself in his work, eventually becoming isolated. It was a vulnerability that had allowed Seth to take advantage.
Freya’s heart ached as she finally understood Micah’s internal struggle. His rejection was not about her. It was about the burden of responsibility and fear of creating more regrets.
Desperate, she grabbed his hand, tears streaming down her face. "It’s okay, you don’t have to love me. Just treat me like a servant at your side. I’ll do anything for you."
