Mrs. Watson didn’t even dare to sleep through the night. She woke up every two hours to check on Gemma, making sure everything was just right.
Even with all these precautions, she still worried about Gemma’s safety. There was no way she would risk feeding her something unsafe.
“Alright, you can go now,” Nash said.
Without concrete evidence, he couldn’t just lay the blame on Mrs. Watson. If only he had security cameras installed at home, he would know exactly who was responsible for Gemma’s poisoning.
As soon as Mrs. Watson left, Nash received a call from his assistant. “Mr. York, I’ve sent over the background report you requested.”
According to the report, Mrs. Watson’s family life was straightforward. She had a daughter who got married a few years ago. The couple ran a grocery store together and had a young son.
They had no debt, and there were no large deposits in their bank records. Her previous employers also spoke highly of her, saying she cared for their children as if they were her own grandchildren.
On paper, Mrs. Watson seemed like an ideal caregiver. But how had Gemma been poisoned?
Nash couldn’t make sense of it until he received a call from Nina. Her voice was calmer than before. “Nash, the toxins have been cleared from Gemma’s system. Her fever’s going down, and she’s stable now.”
“Glad to hear that. I’ll come right back.” Nash was about to return to the hospital alone, but he remembered how anxious Orion had been earlier and decided to take him along.
Hope sat there, thinking it over until evening, when Nash, Nina, Orion, and Gemma finally returned. She still hadn’t come to a decision.
“Mr. York, Mrs. York, how’s Miss Gemma?” Mrs. Watson, who had been with Hope, rushed over when she heard the door open.
Everyone gathered around Gemma, leaving Hope by herself on the couch. Feeling left out, she went to Orion. “Orion, I had to stay here alone all day while you were gone. Now that you’re back, can you play with me?”
Normally, Orion would have agreed right away, but now he didn’t want to leave Gemma’s side. He shook his head. “You’ll have to play by yourself for now. I’m staying with Gemma until she’s fully better.”
