Quincy ignored Tiffany entirely, his back turned, treating her as if she wasn’t even there. Tiffany knew her words had no effect, so she resorted to calling for backup. Less than half an hour later, Mrs. Perez showed up.

Seeing her, Quincy almost lost it. “Mom, you’re not in good health. You just had surgery. What are you doing out of the hospital?”

“Good thing I came. Who knows how long you would’ve stood out here acting like an idiot if I hadn’t shown up?” She tapped his forehead hard, her voice sharp with frustration. “Quincy, I’m practically on my deathbed. Can’t you just let me have a little peace?”

If Lydia’s background had been ordinary, Mrs. Perez would have gladly paid her to leave. But Lydia wasn’t just anyone. She was the daughter of the influential Fay family.

Mrs. Perez couldn’t interfere directly with them, so she had no choice but to pressure her son instead. “I’m begging you, let me spend my last days in peace. Stop giving me reasons to worry. If you insist on staying out here, fine. I’ll stand here with you.”

Quincy’s mother slipped off her coat and handed it to Tiffany. Beneath, she only had on a thin shirt that barely kept the chill away.

Tiffany tried to put the coat back on her, but she waved her off. “It’s my fault as a mother that my son’s out here in the cold, so I’ll stand here with him. Why should I be comfortable in the hospital while he’s shivering out here?”

“Mom, do you need me to beg just to get you to stop?” Quincy’s voice was flat, his expression full of resignation. The people who could wound him the most were always the ones closest to him.

“Quincy, I don’t need you to beg. I just want you to let Lydia go, once and for all. It’s my dying wish. Can’t you grant me that? Or am I supposed to go to my grave with this regret?” She looked as if she would sit down right there on the ground to make her point.
