Ben didn’t respond, drinking in brooding silence.
Just as Hunter was about to press further, Nash shot him a glance that made him hold his tongue.
Ben drank heavily, while Nash and Quincy eventually excused themselves, and Caleb hurried off to handle work.
In the end, it was just Ben and Hunter left in the private lounge.
Hunter patted Ben on the shoulder. “If you can’t forget her, then maybe it’s time to accept her. Even if things don’t turn out as expected, as long as you’ve done your best and have a clear conscience, that’s enough. You’re the one building a life with her, so why get hung up on something so trivial?”
He was referring to Jamie’s past. And if Ben really wanted to count, he was her first man.
But no man could truly tolerate betrayal.
What Ben couldn’t get past wasn’t Jamie’s past, but her abandonment and the way she had betrayed him.
“I’m done talking about Jamie,” Ben said coldly. “I’ll settle the tab. You stay and enjoy yourself. I’m heading home.”
Ben got up and left without looking back.
Hunter noticed the storm of emotions brewing in Ben’s expression. Someone like him, weighed down by so much inner turmoil, clearly needed to deal with it alone.
Hunter didn’t follow.
What Ben didn’t expect, however, was to run into Jamie as soon as he stepped outside.
He would never forget her face in this lifetime. But why was she here?
He strode toward her with purpose.
Jamie instinctively stepped back, but Ben’s long strides quickly closed the distance. He grabbed her wrist firmly.
