Ben wanted nothing more than to wring Jamie's neck after hearing her cold, cutting words.

“I don’t need your lectures,” he growled.

Human nature? Didn’t she think he knew enough about it already? He had seen it in every case he handled, and he had learned it the hardest way through her betrayal.

When he fell for Jamie, it had been with the intent to marry her, to share a future. But she had stabbed him in the back without hesitation. And yet, when he tried to hate her, tried to wish for her downfall, he couldn’t bring himself to follow through.

“Stay here and reflect on your actions, Jamie.”

Ben knew her well enough. If she cried, begged for forgiveness, he would soften. But she didn’t. Instead, all she cared about was that child, the child he refused to acknowledge.

“Fine,” he thought grimly. “Let’s see how long that bastard can survive.”

Meanwhile, Ben’s mother, Mrs. Lucas, had failed to convince him to cut ties with Jamie. This left her in a tough spot, especially with Summer Larson.

Summer, the woman she had handpicked for Ben, came from a reputable family. She was everything a Lucas wife should be—cultured, poised, and fiercely loyal. But no matter how perfect she was, Ben wouldn’t even glance her way, let alone give her the time of day.

Summer, however, wasn’t ready to give up. She understood Jamie’s hold on Ben. Jamie was the one he had loved since youth, his unattainable ideal. Still, Summer wasn’t deterred. She believed love unblessed by parents would never last, and with Mrs. Lucas on her side, she could carve a place for herself in Ben’s life.

“Is Ben busy lately? I haven’t seen him at the firm,” Summer asked delicately, though she suspected he was with Jamie.
