Caleb immediately sensed something was off. He placed his hand against Jamie’s forehead, only to jerk it back moments later.
“She’s burning up. It could be an infection, but with the medication she’s taken, it should’ve improved by now.”
He quickly began a preliminary check, tilting Jamie’s head back, gently prying her eyelids open, and shining a small flashlight into her eyes. The faint response made his brows knit into a tight furrow.
“This isn’t normal,” he muttered, rifling through his medical bag and slipping a dissolvable tablet into her mouth. “This is beyond me. We need to get her to a hospital immediately. A full checkup might be the only way to figure out what’s going on.”
Ben didn’t waste a second. He scooped Jamie into his arms and strode downstairs without so much as a glance back.
“Hey, you could at least slow down and let me help!” Caleb called out, but Ben didn’t respond. He was already out the door, moving like a storm.
Caleb glanced down at himself. His disheveled coat was barely covering his pajamas and his feet was still clad in mismatched plaid slippers. The urgency of the call had left him no time to prepare, and now, here he was, standing in the cold night air, abandoned.
Grinding his teeth, he muttered, “Ben, you’re the most infuriating, self-centered friend. Ugh, I’ll never forgive you for this. Never!”
The wind carried away his grumbles as Ben rushed Jamie into the ER. Inside, the bustling hospital crowd barely registered as he approached the triage desk.
“Help her, now! She’s burning up and completely unresponsive!”
The medical staff sprang into action, surrounding Jamie and whisking her into the treatment room.
Minutes crawled by, stretching into twenty, before a doctor emerged, pulling down their mask.
“Is it an infection from her wound?” Ben asked, his voice sharp with worry.
“It doesn’t look like it,” the doctor replied with a sigh. “It might be viral, likely due to a weakened immune system. Cases like this can be rare, but we’ve stabilized her for now. We’ll run blood tests to confirm the cause.”
As Jamie was wheeled out of the room, her condition looked markedly better, though she was still pale and frail.
