Receiving such a rare opportunity to participate in an international exchange program was not only a strong affirmation of Karina’s professional abilities but also a perfect chance to broaden her horizons and elevate her career.
However, Sera who had been scheming with her saw this as another opportunity to escalate her plans.
She approached Karina privately, slipping her a small packet of white powder. “Dr. Norman,” she whispered, her voice low and deliberate, “while you’re traveling with the director, find an opportunity to slip this into his drink. Once it’s done, I’ll give you another hundred thousand.”
Karina’s eyes widened in horror, and she instinctively shook her head. “No! That’s illegal. I won’t do it.”
Sera’s expression darkened, her voice turning cold and sharp. “Don’t forget! You already took my money and agreed to help me.”
She leaned in closer, her words dripping with menace. “If you refuse, I’ll expose you. I’ll tell everyone you accepted money and secretly took photos of the director. Your career will be over, and you’ll be humiliated.
“Not to mention, what about the Stone family? If they find out you blew this opportunity, they’ll make your life even more miserable.”
The color drained from Karina’s face as if someone had siphoned the blood right out of her. She thought about the years of hard work it had taken to get here. Was she really about to lose everything because of this moment?
But how could she betray her conscience? How could she face Wilfred after what he had done for her—after the trust he had shown her?
Sensing her hesitation, Sera pressed on, her tone more persuasive. “All you have to do is slip it into his drink. He’ll fall asleep, and you can snap a couple of photos. That’s it. After this, we’re even, and I’ll leave you alone.”
Karina bit her lip so hard it began to bleed, her mind spiraling. Trapped between fear and guilt, she reluctantly nodded.
Sera’s lips curled into a satisfied smirk as she warned Karina not to try anything funny before walking off, leaving her standing there, clutching the packet of powder with trembling hands.
