As Karina listened to Fiona’s story, an image of the woman with a child she had seen before flashed through her mind.
But she quickly dismissed the thought. It didn’t seem possible.
The next moment, Fiona leaned in conspiratorially, her voice low and full of intrigue. “Honestly, I didn’t believe it either. I mean, the director isn’t that kind of man. But I saw it with my own eyes!”
Karina, unnerved by Fiona’s excitement, asked warily, “Saw what?”
“A love child!”
“That’s impossible. The director doesn’t have a love child. You must have seen wrong,” Karina said firmly, instinctively wanting to defend Wilfred’s reputation.
As far as she knew, Wilfred didn’t even have a romantic partner, let alone a child.
But Fiona wasn’t backing down. Sensing Karina’s skepticism, she upped the ante. “If you don’t believe me, come see for yourself.”
Before Karina could decline, Fiona dragged her off to investigate.
“There! Look over there. I wasn’t lying, was I? I saw that kid with the director this morning. And now there’s a woman too. Do you think she’s his wife?”
Karina followed Fiona’s pointed finger and saw the woman. She was Nina, the same person she had seen the other day.
Nina hadn’t noticed her yet, but Fiona was already buzzing with excitement. “Everyone’s been sneaking peeks at them. Hey, aren’t you close with the director? She looks like she’s heading to his office. Why don’t you go ask him?”
Karina withdrew her gaze from the graceful woman and replied calmly, “Ask him what? Even if it’s true…”
She thought to herself, “even if it is true, what right do I have to ask?”
The thought flashed through her mind, startling her.
But as fate would have it, Karina didn’t need to seek out Nina. Nina came to her instead.
When Nina appeared at the door with a warm smile and knocked politely, Karina froze for a moment. “Miss Walker?”
Nina stepped inside, holding Orion’s hand. Her graceful demeanor was evident even in the simplest movements, like sitting down.
She smiled warmly, exuding friendliness. “Sorry to bother you. I was looking for Dr. Wilfred, but he’s not here. I don’t know anyone else at the hospital, so I thought I’d stop by and see you.”
Hearing the slight note of apology in Nina’s tone, Karina felt flustered. “It’s no bother at all, Miss Walker. As a friend of the director, you’re more than welcome.”
Still, she felt awkward about having nothing to offer as a host. After rummaging around, all she could find were two leftover tangerines from her lunch. Holding them in her hands, she hesitated. Offering them felt inadequate, but not offering them seemed rude.
Just then, Orion saved her from the dilemma by asking sweetly, “Can I have one of those tangerines?”
