Karina could definitely manage on her own. She was motion sick, not incapacitated.
Still, this side of Wilfred was unfamiliar to her. Seeing his face so close, she couldn’t help but notice how attentive he was. Her cheeks burned, and though she didn’t reach up to touch them, she knew they must be flushed.
“I can handle it myself,” she muttered, sitting up to take the water and swallow the medicine he’d brought.
The medicine didn’t work instantly. Exhaustion and dizziness overtook her again, and she lay back down, drained. Her head throbbed, her stomach churned, and sleep seemed like the only escape.
Wilfred, clearly aware of her discomfort, spoke with even more gentleness. Pulling a blanket over her, he said, “Rest for a bit. Once the medicine kicks in, you’ll feel much better.”
Karina, her eyes heavy with fatigue, glanced at the soft blanket. “Where did this come from?”
The blanket was incredibly soft, wrapping around her in a comforting, cozy warmth.
Wilfred smiled faintly. “I asked for one earlier. Don’t worry about it—just sleep.”
Something about his soothing tone made it impossible to resist. As her eyelids grew heavier, she drifted off without another word.
When Karina woke up, the plane was still in the air, and everything was quiet. The cabin lights were dimmed, and the world outside the window was pitch black. She noticed the window shades had been pulled down.
Shifting slightly, she realized her small movement had disturbed someone beside her.
Wilfred stirred and opened his eyes, his voice husky from sleep as he asked, “You’re awake? How are you feeling?”
He reached out to adjust the blanket that had slipped down from her shoulders, the motion so natural it seemed like second nature.
Karina became acutely aware of the situation between them. It felt undeniably intimate. The two seats were right next to each other, and at some point while Karina had been asleep, so had Wilfred. Without either of them realizing it, they had leaned into one another as they rested.
