Nina woke up groggily to the smell of roasting meat. When she opened her eyes, the sky was just beginning to lighten.
She checked the time and it was only a little past 5 a.m. The temperature difference between night and day was stark, and as she stepped out of the tent, she instinctively hugged her arms for warmth.
Everyone was already up, and Moana pointed to the fire where meat was roasting.
July translated, "You didn’t eat last night. You should eat something now. We’ll be leaving soon."
Nina did not have an appetite. She had always harbored a doubt. Her goal wasn’t simply to find Scott but to uncover her possible connection to the organization.
How else could she have known the secret mechanisms subconsciously?
She might have escaped the organization as the only clean slate, but Seth’s reaction to her was too strange, as if he saw another person within her.
There might be a shocking secret she carried, one that only she could unlock. She knew this journey was dangerous, but if she let fear hold her back, she would be trapped in this mystery forever.
Someone was out to get her, and she couldn't remain passive. She had to take the initiative.
Feeling guilty, she looked at Scarlett. "I'm sorry."
Scarlett was surprised. "Why are you apologizing? You haven’t done anything wrong."
"I didn't expect the conditions here to be so harsh. I was naive and made you suffer," Nina explained.
She had grown up in a comfortable environment. Not wealthy, but without hardship. Only upon leaving her country did she realize how sheltered she had been.
Scarlett raised an eyebrow and smiled. "I’m not afraid of hardship. Compared to my past, this is nothing. At least I’m alive and well. Don’t overthink it and don’t feel bad. I don’t have any family, and I’ve long considered you as my family.
"Besides…"
"Besides what?" Nina asked, seeing Scarlett hesitate.
"Even if you hadn’t come, I would have. Don’t forget, I’m a special forces soldier now. This is my duty," Scarlett said.
Nina joked, "You’re really committed. Have you been brainwashed?"
Scarlett laughed. "Maybe. It’s strange. Before, I never thought about it, but now that I have this title, I feel a responsibility. I want to be a hero."
Scarlett leaned closer to Nina, linking arms with her, "Do you think if I hadn’t joined the organization, I might have become a soldier? My life could have reached another level."
Nina squeezed her hand. "Absolutely. You’re incredibly brave and you would have achieved great things."
Scarlett laughed, unable to stop.
"What’s so funny?" Nina asked, finding Scarlett's laughter a bit excessive.
Scarlett finally managed to control her laughter and said, "It's just that you said it so seriously. It’s kind of funny. But I agree with you. If my life hadn’t started with the organization, I would have been someone who really loves life."
