An imprint on Ayisha
“Where did you go when we were all bathing?” Claire called out Jada in the midst of the group. It’s night and the ladies were gathered around fire outside the remains of the jet, their safehouse. “I went to take a shit. Or is a girl no longer entitled to her own privacy?” Jada retorted with no iota of respect.
“Oh, she’s talking back at me.” Claire stood up tall now. She was ready to give them an interesting show. You could tell by the manner at which she squinted her eyes.
“If for real you went to take a shit. Why then did you return covered in a smell of rotten eat and oil from meat.”
All eyes were now on Jada at Claire’s accusation. But Jada wasn’t ready to give herself up.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Claire raised her voice this time, “Don’t tell me you you’re fucking with that loser just because of meat!” “Wait!! Did I just hear someone say JUST BECAUSE OF MEAT?”
Jada stood up tall now. She obviously wasn’t having it. She was standing opposite Claire, across the circular gathering. Claire was stunned at Jada’s reaction. She was processing what guts Jada had to shout back at her. Jada continued.
“What has staying with you got us? How far have we come? We can’t even eat meat. I’m surprised that I haven’t shit coconut!!! And you said Just?”
She scoffed, taking two steps forward into the middle of the group, “We sleep like cows in a pen, rolling on each other through the night. Even pigs don’t sleep like that. We can’t have a decent night without a fight or fright. The cold is unbearable. Lighting this fire was like being kissed by a god! Lying around and — should I keep making a list. And the almighty leader said what, Just?”
Claire charged at Jada,
“You fucking bitch.”
She was ready to have a fight but the rest divided themselves into groups to stop the two, because Jada herself wasn’t going to cower. She saw shy not dumb! “Can we all come to our senses please!!!”
Tendzel yelled at once and everyone took a pause. An automatic one! “We are in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere and what are we doing? Fighting?
Appeton Ay.cha
What if some wild animal hear our noise and come for us, then what?” Everyone of them pondered on Tendzel’s words, calming down. “One thing that should be clear is that we have no leader. No one is leading anyone. We are just poor spoilt brats who ended up on an uninhibited island. Shouldn’t we think of a way to survive instead of bicker unnecessarily?!!!”
“May I speak.”
The calmest of them, Mira raised her hand as though they were in some classroom. She was quite an opposite of her twin sister, Laurette. Though the latter claimed to be calm and quiet too, but it was usually a charade. A charade the media taught her.
“Okay, I guess that’s a yes.”
She stepped forward, looking from one girl to the other. None of them said anything in precise to her.
“Though we all hate to admit it, but this situation is obviously out of our hand. All we need is a capable hand, and so far, none of us have proven to be capable except the one we call a loser, Damien.” “What are you trying to say then? That we should depend on a man to survive? Where is your feminist spirit? Aren’t you a–”
