ATHENA
Tears threaten to spill, but it’s not sadness I feel, it’s fear.
I’m shaking, every muscle in my body on high alert. My mind races, trying to piece together what’s happening, but the thoughts come out disjointed, scrambling against each other.
I watch as Alex speeds off.
Where is he going?
To Arnold?
Or Zayan?
“I didn't think I'd be baby sitting you today. What happened?” Luca asks me.
I look at him with tears in my eyes.
“I… don't know. Some Arnold guy-”
Luca's expression changes.
“Arnold Brown?”
“I think so.”
He steps closer, his expression turning serious making my heart beat even faster, should I tell him about Zayan too?
“What did he do?” Luca asks.
“He just made some remarks about me.” I mumble unsure if that's reason enough to explain why he looked ready to kill.
Luca curses under his breath,
“Listen, I need you to go inside the house. Don't leave or open for anyone, do you understand?”
“Why… what's going on?”
“I have to go after Alex, so he doesn’t do something reckless.”
“Reckless like what?” Fear grabs my already pounding heart.
“If you don't tell me then I won't go in there. I'd rather go with you.” I protest.
Luca releases another curse. “Athena, I need you to go inside so I can bring your man back before things get worse.” He explains and I hate how he's making me feel like a damn kid.
What's with these men?
“What things?” I push.
Luca sighs, running a frustrated hand down his face. “Athena, don’t do this right now.”
But I cross my arms, standing my ground even as my heart races like it’s about to burst out of my chest. "No. I’m not going inside unless you tell me what’s going on."
His jaw ticks. "Stop being difficult."
“Difficult?!” I scoff, stepping closer to him. “You expect me to sit quietly like some doll while Alex is out there about to do God-knows-what?”
“You don’t understand—”
“Then make me understand!” I snap. “Because I’m tired of being left in the dark. First Alex, now you. What the hell is Arnold Brown to you people? Why is Alex acting like that? And don’t you dare tell me to go inside again!"
Luca’s eyes narrow, something soft flashing in them. “Weren't you the one with him? I should be asking you that.”
“What? No! I have no idea why he got so angry.” I blurt out.
Luca looks at me, he's brown eyes searching mine before pressing his lips in a thin line.
“Your husband will tell you once he comes back then.”
“I’m not moving an inch until you start talking!” I yell, my chest heaving, tears burning my eyes but refusing to fall.
How am I supposed to sit and wait like all is well?
He stares at me for a long second, his body rigid, like he’s holding himself back.
Then he mutters, "I don’t have time for this," before he suddenly lunges forward.
“Wait—!” I cry out, trying to step back, but I’m too slow.
Luca’s hand comes down hard, and before I can even register what's happening, everything goes black.
************
When I wake up, my head feels like it’s been split in two.
A pounding ache drums against my skull, making me groan as I blink against the brightness of the room.
I’m lying on a couch in what looks like the living room, a soft blanket thrown over me.
What the hell just happened?
