“How is she?” As soon as I hear Aubrey enter the alpha house I spring from my office to find her.
Yes I might have put pressure on Aubrey to check on her, but she was just as concerned as I was. Kaia had distanced herself and even the pack, as a whole, was missing her bright daily smile.
“She’s doing better than I thought, she’s a strong one.”
Yes, she is a strong she–wolf, but that doesn’t stop me from worrying about her.
She wanted to be placed in a house furthest away from me as possible.
I declined, she has been allocated a house to herself but it is still close by. My wolf warned me from putting her too far away.
At night time I often stroll past, as part of my night time walk. Funny, I didn’t walk at night before she moved out.
Sometimes I don’t even realise where I am until my wolf gives me back control. I can never muster the courage to knock on the door which is bloody absurd being it is my pack house, my pack door.
“She let you in?”
“She didn’t have a choice, I let myself in.”
“Aubrey…” I turn playfully at her, impressed by her forcefulness.
“You wanted to know she was okay, so I checked.”
“And?”
“She’s still healing Alpha, she needs time. Just give her time.”
That I can do.
His arrival was announced to me through the pack–link as soon as he reached the main gate. I granted approval for access, I wanted to hear what he had to say for himself.
But if he thinks I am greeting him outside he has another thing coming.
He wants to talk, he can come and find me. I certainly won’t be running out the red carpet.
A knock on the office door further annouces that he has found me. With a deep breath I settle my inner patience, I would need it.
“Come on in Alpha Damon, I’ve been expecting you.”
“You have?” He walks in and closes the door behind him.
“Would you like refreshments Alpha?” Aubrey is already preparing drinks for our visitor, her voice hitting me through the mind–link.

“No, he won’t be staying.” I respond to her before returning my full attention to the retired alpha in front of
“I knew it would only be a matter of time before he sent you. Getting his Father to do his dirty work.”
“You two just have a way of winding each other up.”
As always, playing down how truly I have been wronged.
“Nope, just him always getting his own way.”
“Well, he wants Kaia back.”
You’ve got to be shitting me.
“Not a chance. Kaia is my pack member now.”
“And the wife..”
“Ex wife.”
“The wife of the Amber Desert Alpha. She has a contract in place that she can’t hide from.”
“He doesn’t need her, from what I hear Alora is awake. Have you seen her?” I lean forward on my desk, letting my aura start to circulate around us.
“No…I’ve been in retirement. There must be something we can do to settle this, without it getting messy.” Hhmm, that sounds more like Medea. Unbelievable, who exactly was running the Amber Desert pack.
“You all should have thought about that…”
“Hector.” He tries to cut me off but this was my pack, my authority was king here.
“Before you denied our mate bond and drove Alora to suicide.”
“We did no such thing.”
“You gave her no choice, she couldn’t see a way out. Than always whispering in her ear, always controlling her, never letting her think for herself. Always getting his own way. Well he won’t. I might not have fought hard enough for Alora, but I will for Kaia…he’s not getting her. Now if that’s the only reason you came, I’ll see you out.”
I was seething, I could feel the rage inside of me. Like a red monster wanting to get out and set fire to the world. Set fire to Than and the Amber Desert pack.
“Alpha Damon..next time don’t fight his battles for him. It makes him look weak.”
I walk him out of my house, the sooner he was off my grounds the better.
In my incensed state I fail to notice her outside.
“Kaia….”
“Alpha Damon…”
