Chapter 187
Anna’s POV:
sely absorbed in her phone
call. She
didn’t police we walk
I spotted Scarlett outside the hospital entrance,
Maybe she was here because of lingering issues from her previous injury.
Whatever.
I’d avoid her–we were probably headed to different departments anyway.
The emergency room was packed, but people parted like the Red Sea when they saw the blood on my neck. The doctor’s expression didn’t inspire confidence.
“You’ve lost quite a bit of blood,” he said, examining my wound. “I’d recommend having someone pick you up. You might faint on your way home.
Sitting in his office, I weighed my options. No police report. No telling anyone what happened. Seth didn’t need this drama with his family. But I did need a ride.
Emily was my only option. I called her from a quiet corner in the hallway.
“Were you sleeping?” I asked when she answered with
a
groggy voice.
“Yeah. My parents are retiring, so I’m at their final conference with them. You know how it is with them–early to bed. What’s up, Anna?”
“Nothing serious. I’m traveling soon and wanted you to assign me an assistant.”
“Of course! You’re practically a celebrity at EcoMarine now. We’re swamped though–Scarlett’s company is tanking, and we’ve picked up a lot of their projects. I’ll post a job listing online. You can train the newbie and help develop talent for the company.”
*…Your scheming is impressive.”
“Just doing my job,” Emily laughed. “Beg me nicely, and I’ll find you a hot one!”
After hanging up, emptiness washed over me. Coming to a hospital alone really was “loneliness at its peak.” I felt raw and vulnerable.
I wrapped a silk scarf around my neck to hide the bandage–no need to frighten any cab drivers.
Heading down the stairs, my vision suddenly blurred. My body pitched forward, but the expected pain never came.
Instead, strong arms caught me, accompanied by that familiar cologne.
Blake.
Scarlett’s words must have gotten through to him.
Funny how he never listened this well when I was actually his wife.
I remembered that night I had a high fever–Blake was celebrating Claire’s birthday and couldn’t be bothered to check on me at the hospital. What a fool I’d been.
I kept my head down, fighting the burning sensation in my nose.
“Thanks, I mumbled, pretending not to recognize him and trying to leave.
His hand closed around my wrist. “What’s wrong with you?
I turned to see his fingers gripping me, his palm burning hot against my skin. It felt like it was scorching through my flesh.
Chapter 187
“Let go! I demanded, my voice tense.
Tell me what’s wrong and I will, he countered.
“It’s none of your business.”
“Don’t tell me then. I can always check your medical records.”
