Chapter 72
Anna’s POV:
Morning light streamed through the floor–to–ceiling windows of the kitchen as I carefully arranged three identical breakfast plates.
Each one contained whole wheat toast, boiled chicken breast, blueberries, and a bowl of oatmeal. I adjusted my deep blue apron over my beige suit, making sure everything looked perfect.
Martha walked in and stopped abruptly. “Mrs. Wright, you don’t have to do this yourself…”
I shook my head with a smile “Please tell Blake that I made breakfast today. Claire’s portion too.”
I glanced at the kitchen clock, quickly removed my apron, and smoothed down my suit and hair. Grabbing my briefcase and car keys, I prepared to head to the newly reopened EcoMarine Group.
As I drove through the morning traffic, I couldn’t help but think about how Wright Group had become the new investor behind EcoMarine.
I didn’t care about the ownership change–I just wanted to ensure that my colleagues and I could continue our conservation work. Still, it was surprising how Blake had managed to get the company up and running again in less than a month.
He always gets what he wants, no matter the cost.
“Anna, are you sure you’re okay?” Emily asked, gripping my hand tightly as we sat in Henry’s office. “You should rest more.”
“I’m not sad, Em,” I said flatly. “After two weeks alone overseas, I’ve run out of tears. The doctor said my mother didn’t suffer much
at the end.”
I stood up and bowed deeply to both of them. “Thank you for everything you’ve done.”
They jumped up, clearly startled by the formality.
“What kind of deal did you and Blake make?” Emily asked carefully.
My chest tightened, and breathing suddenly became difficult. Part of me wanted to collapse into Emily’s arms and let myself be vulnerable, but with Henry present, I couldn’t. Besides, I knew Henry and Seth were close.
“Em, you know better than anyone how long I’ve loved Blake,” I replied.
Emily had been my living diary, witnessing my journey from starry–eyed infatuation to my desperate “it’s him or no one phase, and finally to the crushing realization that I had married a stranger. But couldn’t tell her that my marriage was now just a compromise.
I sighed, meeting Emily’s concerned gaze.
“Anna, you can’t fool me,” Henry said suddenly. “You’re not happy!”
Tturned to him, my expression deliberately distant. “Henry, you don really know me.”
He awkwardly pushed his glasses up and cleared his throat. “Sorry, that was inappropriate.”
“It’s fine,” I said with a forced smile.
Henry leaned forward. “Would you like to continue with your assistant duties? Data compilation and tab sample analysis?”

I shook my head. After everylning I’d been through, shuffling papers and analyzing samples in a lab wouldn’t satisfy me arrymore. I needed to grow quickly both n skills and reputation. I wanted to held my future in my own hands, not be at someone else’s merej again.
Ne
I’m giving you my coral reef restoration project, Henry said, sliding folder across the desk. Ill be leaving in a month, but I’ll help you get familiar with everything before I go.”
I wasn’t surprised by his announcement. Henry and Seth were friends–there was no way he’d work for Blake.
“Anna, there’s something you should know about the project,” he said, keeping his voice low. “Lucas and Jade are going through a pretty rough divorce right now. They were marine biology’s power couple just three years ago, and now…” He shook his head.
“Is it affecting their work?” asked.
Henry nodded. “Both of them are struggling, but Jade’s taking it particularly hard. She’s even mentioned leaving the company. He paused, adjusting his gold–rimmed glasses. “I wanted to give you a heads–up. If she does resign, you ll need to prepare for a transition of her responsibilities.”
“I understand,” I replied, already feeling the weight of potential extra work. “I’ll keep an eye on her projects and make sure I’m ready if it comes to that.”
“Good,” Henry said with a tight smile. “I knew I could count on you, Anna.”
“By the way, maybe you should visit Kate at the police station again, Henry suggested. “Give that situation some closure.”
