Lucas just stood there, stunned for a couple of seconds. He could barely believe what he’d just heard. “What did you say?”
Chloe’s voice was steady. “I said I’m not going with you.”
“Why?” Lucas was completely lost, confusion clouding his face. But his chest felt tight, pain twisting inside him. He had no idea where things had gone wrong.
He stepped forward and grabbed Chloe’s hand, desperate now. “Why? Did you fall for Connor? He’s a liar, Chloe. You can’t let yourself be fooled by him.”
Lucas’s voice trembled, pleading. “Rose, I’m your husband. Don’t you trust me anymore? For the past two years, it’s just been us. Only us.”
But Chloe cut him off, her gaze unwavering. “I’m not Rose. I’m Chloe.”
Up until now, all their conversations had been in Japanese. But this—this one sentence, she said it in Old English. And she spoke it perfectly, like she’d been speaking it her whole life.
Lucas froze, staring at her in shock. For a second, real fear flashed in his eyes. “You… how do you know Old English?”
Lucas was at a loss, desperate. “No, that’s not true. I can explain. Chloe, let me explain, please!” He held her hand tighter, panic rising in his eyes.
But Chloe just shook her head, her voice unwavering. “It doesn’t matter. I won’t ever trust you again.”
