Chloe leaned in, her voice low. “Remember last time at the Shaw family’s place? Grant kept bringing up my engagement to Isaac and Taylor, but all he really wanted was the treasure key.”
Connor nodded. “You’d lost your memory back then. You forgot where you hid it.”
A small smile tugged at Chloe’s lips. “I left it at Greenpeace Estate.”
Connor looked at her, genuinely surprised. “I’ve searched that place top to bottom. It wasn’t in any of the safes.”
She shook her head, still smiling. “I didn’t use a safe.”
“Then where is it?” Connor asked, more curious than ever.
“You’ll see when we get there,” Chloe teased.
That night, they drove straight back to Riverbrook, heading for Greenpeace Estate. But instead of going upstairs, Chloe made a beeline for the kitchen.
Connor trailed behind her, totally confused.
He watched as Chloe opened the fridge, reaching for the bottom shelf—the one where they always kept the ice cream.
She pulled out several tubs and, nestled in the very back, found three ornate jewelry boxes.
Inside were a pink emerald pendant, another emerald pendant with a dragon emblem, and a signet ring.
Connor burst out laughing. “You hid them in the freezer?”
Chloe shrugged, a playful look on her face. “Lisa was obsessed with the Shaw family’s emerald pendant. She even sent people to steal it a few times. I figured even the best thief wouldn’t think to check the freezer.”
Connor ran a hand over his face, grinning. “Thieves always go for safes, never freezers. I have to admit, that’s pretty clever.”
With the three keys finally in hand, they didn’t waste any time getting back to Eldridge City.
From the Gilbert family, Pax arrived on his own. Lando’s health had been failing for years, and he’d been living in a care home. There was no way he could handle a trip up the mountain.
The Nagel family hadn’t been so lucky.
Kent looked defeated, weighed down by the knowledge that the Nagel family had fallen on his watch.
Now, their only hope was that the last heir of the Grevenberg family would keep their promise and split the treasure. That was why Kent was the most eager of anyone for this upcoming gathering.
Kash broke the silence. “I’m worried about this meeting. What if it’s just a trap to get Jeffery and Nemo up there?”
By then, Connor had already filled everyone in on the long, tangled history behind all this drama.
