Chloe couldn’t help glancing over at Connor.
He was staring at the priest, completely lost in thought.
“Amitabha. Sorry to keep you all waiting,” the priest finally said, his voice breaking through the heavy silence.
His eyes landed straight on Jeffery and the person next to him, and he walked over without hesitation.
Then, out of nowhere, he dropped to his knees in front of Nemo.
Everyone was stunned.
Even Nemo looked startled. “What are you doing?”
The priest took a deep breath. “Killian, I’ve owed you my life ever since you saved me all those years ago.”
Gasps rippled through the room.
Connor and Chloe froze, the name hanging in the air—
Killian?
Killian?!
But Jeffery and Nemo didn’t look surprised at all.
Nemo was calm as he spoke. “Back then, I was sent to wipe out your whole family. But when I got there, they were already gone. I found you—just a scared little kid—hiding behind the rocks in the Grevenberg family’s garden. I took you away, nursed you back to health. I guess that’s what you’re thanking me for.”
Killian nodded. “I was so terrified, I nearly died. If you hadn’t spent so much money and rare medicine to save me, I wouldn’t have made it. I’ve never forgotten what you did.”
Nemo sighed. “I was supposed to destroy your family. Everything that came after was just fate messing with us. It wasn’t really kindness, and you know that. You don’t need to bow to me.”
Killian shook his head. “Kindness is kindness. Revenge is something else. I’ll thank you first. We can settle the rest later.”
He bowed his head, then turned and did the same to Jeffery.
“Jeffery, thank you for taking me in back then.”
Jeffery’s face darkened with anger.
He’d always suspected this was coming.
But now that the truth was right in front of him, he couldn’t help himself.
Connor and Chloe were beyond shocked.
Hank—the man Claire always talked about, the one she called Colin.
The man buried in Claire’s backyard.
The one Claire had loved to the point of madness, the one whose death broke her completely.
His brutal end had left Claire trapped in darkness.
She spent her whole life hating Connor, tormenting him, all because of that pain.
But in her final moments, she learned Connor was her son with Hank.
Crushed by regret, she took her own life.
And now, that man was standing right in front of them, alive.
