"Mr. Lucas, just say what's on your mind."
"I've got a secret that Mr. Connor will definitely want to hear, but it's something neither of us would want Chloe to find out about."
Connor frowned. While he was mulling it over, Chloe got pulled away by Tara. Connor stood up and headed to the lounge. He had a pretty good idea what the secret was, but he was intrigued by why Lucas wanted him there now.
The lounge door opened, and there was Lucas, sitting on the sofa, staring off into space with a notebook in his hands. Connor walked in, casually shutting the door behind him. He settled onto the sofa across from Lucas and grabbed an apple from the table, slicing it up with ease.
He took a bite of the apple, relaxed, and said lightly, "Alright, spill it. I'm curious to see what kind of drama you're trying to stir up in my marriage today, Mr. Lucas."
From the moment Connor walked in, Lucas couldn't take his eyes off him. Dressed in a custom suit, Connor had that polished look of someone who just belonged, exuding a natural authority and charm. Even the way he sliced the apple was almost artistic.
Lucas had to admit it. That air of nobility and command was what he had always craved. He wanted to be the one everyone admired, standing out from the crowd. But he just didn't have the knack or the guts for it. Chloe, though, she had it in spades. She'd always been a step ahead of him since they were kids, and that left him with a love twisted by jealousy and self-doubt.
If he had just accepted his ordinary nature from the start, maybe Linda wouldn't have been able to mess with him using that diary. Now, Linda was at it again, trying to use the diary to cause trouble between Chloe and Connor. Not that it was for his benefit. Linda had her own reasons for wanting to disrupt their marriage, and she was using him to do it.
But Lucas went along with it anyway. He was curious. He hadn't passed the test before, but could Connor? If this diary could come between them, it would show Connor wasn't any different from him. That he didn't deserve Chloe either.
