Lisa's heart had been torn to shreds by Barrett for ages. But she just couldn't accept that she'd been so naive. She kept coming up with excuses to fool herself. She wanted to outdo Chloe just once. This was something Chloe adored, and Lisa had managed to snatch it right from under her nose. Watching Chloe chase after it so desperately, only to end up empty-handed, must have stung. That was all Lisa needed to feel satisfied.
Barrett's grin widened. The disdain and contempt in his eyes were crystal clear. "Lisa, you're adorably clueless. Can't you see? Chloe's been playing you all along, jacking up the price on purpose, and then letting you bear the cost like a fool," Barrett pointed out.
Lisa blinked, finally catching on: "You mean Chloe set me up?"
Barrett shrugged, looking exasperated. "Everyone else saw it, but you were in the dark, raising the stakes over and over. I feel bad for Ms. Claire's money. Lisa, your name 'Lisa' might as well stand for 'laughable,' right?"
Lisa's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. Anger surged through her, making her tremble. She couldn't believe Chloe had tricked her again. Not only had she lost thirty million for nothing, but she'd also become the butt of jokes among the elite. Lisa finally got why Chloe and Connor seemed so relaxed earlier, barely holding back their laughter. She'd been played for a fool.
Lisa spun around, ready to confront Chloe. But Claire's calm voice stopped her: "Take it easy. Remember, this is being broadcast live. Don't make a scene."
Claire had seen Lisa's foolishness firsthand. After all, she was the one who'd brought her here. If Lisa did something embarrassing, Claire's reputation would take a hit too. In the end, Lisa held back. She figured even if she confronted Chloe, she'd probably lose. She'd only end up worse off.
