Chloe hesitated a bit before grabbing her phone. She wasn't keen on seeing Connor get played. As she pressed it to her ear, a deep voice greeted her, "Cassie, where are you guys?"
Chloe blinked in surprise, "How'd you know it's Cassie?" She could barely recognize the voice herself. Hearing Chloe, Connor felt a wave of relief wash over him. It wasn't Cassie's voice he picked up on, but her distinctive tone. Only Cassie called Chloe “dear” with that unique accent that seemed to lift at the end of each sentence.
Connor dodged Chloe's question, simply asking, "Where are you?" Chloe wasn't about to answer his question either. "What do you want?" she countered.
"Can't I call just because?" Connor's tone rubbed Chloe the wrong way. But she wasn't backing down, "If it's nothing, I'm hanging up."
"Grandma Marian's sick. We need to swing by the family home tonight," he said quickly.
"Sick? How did she suddenly fall ill? Is it serious?" Chloe's demeanor shifted to concern. Truth was, Connor had just concocted that excuse on the fly. He just didn't want Chloe to hang up, maybe he just wanted an excuse to see her. But once the words were out, he had to roll with it.
"Where are you? I'll come get you," he offered. Chloe promptly gave him her address.
After they hung up, Cassie smirked, "Grandma Marian and Jeffery were at the private clinic visiting my granddad just yesterday. Marian looked fit as a fiddle—he’s definitely bluffing."
