Chloe had this gut feeling she just couldn't shake off. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but it felt like they were right there, close by. That flicker of hope in her chest was the only thing keeping her going through the looming darkness.
Claire let out a bitter laugh, "Hope and belief—they're the cheapest things around, but also the cruelest." If believing could actually make a difference, she wouldn't be in this mess today. Back in the day, she had hoped countless times that someone would swoop in and save them. She had prayed for a miracle over and over. But what did she get? Hope just made the fall into despair that much harder. That's how it was for her back then, and now, they had to feel it too. Claire's laugh turned wild and unhinged.
Right then, a loud rush of wind came from not too far off. Birds scattered from the trees, startled into flight. Then, out of nowhere, a fleet of helicopters appeared, closing in fast. They hovered overhead, and Connor looked up, a slight smile playing on his lips. "They're here," he said.
Claire's disbelief was palpable as she looked up to see the helicopters approaching. One had its door wide open, and a figure stood there, clad in full military gear, binoculars in hand. The face might have been unclear, but Claire recognized the silhouette. It was Kash Shaw, the Shaw family's eldest son. Kash, once a SWAT officer, now commanded the region of Eldridge City with formidable power. His presence meant serious military backup was here too.
"This can't be real! How did they find us? It's impossible!" Claire muttered. This was supposed to be a no-man's land, a death zone where regular folks couldn't tread. The place was a signal black hole, blocking any tracking. Finding them here was like finding a needle in a haystack. Claire was furious and regretted not taking out Connor and Chloe earlier.
"Shoot! I command you to shoot!" she yelled, despair clawing at her. If she was going down, she wanted to take Connor and Chloe with her. But the mercenaries, recognizing the dreaded Falcon Squad emblem on the helicopters, ignored her orders and bolted into the forest, leaving Barrett alone.
By now, Connor was losing strength. Letting go of Claire, he collapsed to his knees, blood still pouring from his chest, his face ghostly pale. Seeing Connor release Claire, Barrett rushed over and pulled her along, "Ms. Claire, we have to move. Once they land, it's all over for us."
Claire was reluctant, but she knew she was out of options. Barrett dragged her deeper into the forest. Claire laughed, "It's pointless. We're done for. There's no way out." From the moment she set foot here, she knew she wasn't leaving alive. She had severed all ties to the outside world, wanting everything to end here. There was no escape plan.
Barrett stopped, fully aware of the dire situation. He wrapped Claire in a tight embrace, "Ms. Claire, even if this is the end, I'm with you till the last breath."
