Chloe felt her heart sink as she listened. Just getting a glimpse into Connor's childhood was enough to feel the overwhelming pain and despair he must have endured. It was like he was always standing alone in a storm, with a dark cloud hanging over him constantly. His early years were drenched in shadows, never seeing a ray of sunshine. Chloe pulled Connor into a tight embrace. "Connor, if you need to cry, just let it out."
Even though Connor often said he was over it, that it didn’t bother him anymore, Chloe knew better. That hurt was buried so deep in him that it would never really go away. Connor nestled his head into Chloe's hair. "Chloe, why did she do this to me? I never expected her to love me, but why did she want to tear me apart?"
Chloe didn't have an answer. No one can truly feel another person's pain. She couldn't grasp the full extent of Connor's suffering. In this world, kids naturally love their parents, and they don't get to choose them. Chloe thought about how what really hurt Connor was that every time he forgave and was patient, it only led to more hurt. "Connor, you're not alone anymore. You have me, and soon we'll have our baby. We're a family."
Connor suddenly seemed to find some calm. It was like a light switched on for him. "Yeah, we have a child now. I'm going to be a dad." He placed his hand gently on Chloe's belly. "Baby, come into this world healthy and safe. Mommy and Daddy are going to love you forever."
