Everyone there, except for Chloe, was completely taken aback. Even Kash showed a flicker of surprise before his brow furrowed in confusion. Pax stood right next to them, puzzled by what he thought was Claire’s mistake. How could she confuse his uncle with him?
Pax moved forward, gently grabbing Claire’s arm. "Mom, I’m here. It’s me, Pax," he said softly.
But Claire didn’t even glance at Pax. Her eyes were locked onto Connor, tears already blurring her vision. She clung to Connor with desperation. "My son, my son!" she cried out.
In that moment, Claire seemed to be in a world of her own. Everything else faded away, leaving only Connor in her sight. She looked at him as if she were seeing the embodiment of her deepest love. He was the child she had with Colin. His features were a blend of Hank’s and her own.
Claire’s heart ached with a pain so intense it left her breathless. It wasn’t just the guilt and remorse for the years she had unwittingly tormented Connor. There was also a deep sense of regret and self-loathing. If only she had known from the beginning that Connor was her child. If only she could have been there as he grew, to nurture him. If only he had been by her side all these years, calling her 'Mom.' What a different life that would have been.
For years, she had been trapped in her own personal hell, seeing Connor as a demon she needed to fight off. But she had been so wrong. So very wrong. She could have been happy, truly joyful. The idea of having a child with Colin should have brought her joy beyond measure. But she had destroyed it all. With her own hands.
