Claire mustered up the last of her strength to speak those words. But before she could hear any reply, her hand fell lifeless, and her body went limp. In Pax's arms, she took her final breath.
Pax felt the change instantly. He broke into tears, crying out, "Mom, Mom," again and again, clutching Claire tightly, unwilling to let go.
Connor knelt down slowly beside them. He gently took Claire's hand, his lips moving as he softly whispered, "Mom..." Tears rolled down his cheeks, large and heavy. But his grief was silent, unlike Pax's loud sobs. Connor sat quietly on the stage, holding Claire's hand as it grew cold.
Chloe and Kash stood by, watching the scene unfold. Initially shocked, they soon settled into a somber calm. Together, they walked out of the theater and onto the sandy beach beyond.
The climate here was a world apart from Eldridge City—clear skies, palm trees swaying gently in the breeze, and a picturesque landscape. Yet, their hearts were burdened with sorrow.
Neither of them had seen this ending coming. "Why did Claire take her own life?" Chloe asked, bewildered.
Claire's suicide was a shock. If she truly wanted to end it all, why now? Chloe sensed that Claire was filled with unresolved regret and guilt. She hadn't received Connor's forgiveness, and even in her last moments, she longed for him to call her 'Mom.' She wasn't devoid of hope or desire for life. On the contrary, Chloe felt Claire's deep attachment to this world.
How did it all end so suddenly?
Kash was just as puzzled. "People who end up like this don't usually start in her frame of mind. It seems like she was pushed to the brink."
