Choosing to be a good or bad person is entirely up to the individual, and you can't always blame destiny for everything. Connor, for instance, had been tormented by her since he was a kid. But he made a promise to himself early on: no matter what life threw his way, he wouldn't turn out like Claire. Whether you decide to offer an umbrella to others after getting drenched or rip someone else's apart is always a personal choice. Maybe, just maybe, this ending is the best one she could have had. After all, death wipes the slate clean.
Connor glanced into the distance, murmuring, "Mom, I don't hate you anymore..." He lingered on the balcony for a bit before heading back inside. The lingering smell of smoke clung to him, so he took a shower first. Then he wandered over to the window, pulled back the covers, and gingerly lay down.
Chloe had been awake the whole time, but kept her eyes shut. Once Connor settled in, she snuggled up to him like a little kitten, still with her eyes closed. She whispered, "Honey, I love you."
Connor propped himself up on his elbow, watching Chloe sleep-talking in his arms. A wave of warmth surged through him, filling up the emptiest corners of his heart. The painful, twisted scars seemed to heal instantly. A gentle smile crept onto Connor's lips. He lay back down, hugging Chloe tightly, and kissed her hair: "I love you too, my light."
The next day, it was time for Claire's funeral—a proper send-off. Connor was handling everything, despite the Sartori family's scandals. They were still the wealthiest around. The who's who of the Eldridge Elites showed up to pay their respects. Claire lay in a transparent crystal casket, surrounded by flowers, looking like she was just asleep.
Kent's eyes were red when he saw Claire. He despised her too. He'd been her loyal follower all his life, only to be used and tossed aside. He'd dreamed of getting back at her one day. But seeing her lying there so peacefully, he remembered her bright, youthful days. Grabbing Connor's hand, he asked, "Who was it, who wanted her dead?"
Kent couldn't believe Claire would take her own life. She was too strong-willed for that—when things went south, she'd fight back, not give up. Suzanne stepped forward from the crowd, dressed in a black gown, looking dignified and solemn. "Mr. Kent," she said, "everyone saw the live stream. Our princess was troubled and took her own life, feeling she'd wronged Mr. Connor. Please, don't spread rumors here."
"If there's a reason for the princess's death, it's because of Mr. Connor," she added, causing a murmur among the crowd. Realizing she might have spoken out of turn, Suzanne quickly clarified, "I'm not saying Mr. Connor caused her death. I just mean she couldn't face him and chose to end her life." With a dramatic sigh, Suzanne continued, "She was too caught up in her troubles. Blood is thicker than water—what conflict can't be resolved? If she'd seen things differently, they might've reconciled and become a united family."
