Ecstacy of the Heart novel Chapter 4

“Am I really not dreaming?” Allison lied on the bed. She held the marriage certificate over her head and mumbled. Her mind was jumbled up at the moment and she then remembered the last words Alexander said to her back in the car. He said he could give her anything she wanted, yet only feelings were not included. However, having a second thought of that, wasn’t she doing the same thing too?

As early as two years ago, she had completely lost hope on relationship between men and women from that humiliating betrayal. She even felt that she would not fall in love with someone again throughout this life. Or else, she would not go for a blind date.

The reason two people went for a blind date was to show and display their needs blatantly without any feelings. Marriage was only an act for the outsiders to prove that they could live a “normal” life too. Having thought of that, Allison felt that some load had been taken off her mind.

Although it was only pure chance she was able to officially get married to Alexander, the core of the marriage was what she had planned earlier, which was to live a normal life without romance. What more should she be worried about? After some self-consolations, Allison tugged the blanket over, covered her face with it and went fast asleep. It was already five o’clock in the evening when she woke up. The sun was falling below the horizon and the sun glow shone on the far end of her bed. She rubbed her eyes and was not fully awake.

“Alex, right? Come, come, have some water, and have some apples. I bought these at the market this morning, they’re indeed fresh.” As Allison was still considering whether to have a nap again in a dizzy state, her mother’s extremely enthusiastic voice came from outside her room, which made her shuddered. Alex? Water? Apple? Are we having a guest?

Allison scratched her head and only after some time did she remember Alexander saying he was coming to their house. Could it be that Alex was actually President Parker? She darted out of her room like a rocket and the moment she stepped out of her room, she bumped into Jennifer who was going to knock her door while carrying a fruit plate.

Jennifer rolled her eyes at her daughter who was behaving so reckless, and instantly put up a kind-mother smile. She then said with a neither loud nor soft voice, “Alice, good timing. Alex has come, hurry up and welcome him.” Allison’s heart gave a leap when she heard her mother’s voice. She peeked at the clock on the wall and noticed the clock needle had exactly pointed at six. He really came! And he was really punctual.

With a wry smile, Allison had the urge to escape back into her room, yet Jennifer was agile enough to grab her on the arm. She dragged her to Alexander who was sitting on the couch in the living room. “You guys could have a chat, I’m going to cook.” After saying that with a smile, Jennifer quickly retreated.

The air in the living room seemed to freeze at once. Allison stood there and did not know what to do for a moment. She did not even know where to look. She sometimes looked at the tip of her toes and sometimes glimpsed at Alexander. Alexander had worn a set of grayish-white sport clothes. He looked composed but sporty, and looked friendlier compared to the look he had in the suit he wore during the day. Did he actually return and change his clothes? Allison started to get distracted from her thought once more.
