Chapter 9 

The night was thick and oppressive, like a heavy oak of ink 

Calvin lay in bed, tossing and turning, a sheen of cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. In his dream, Scarlett was huddled in the corner of prison cell, her body drenched in blood. 

Her eyes were vacant, fixed on him, her lips quivering as she whispered, “Calvin… Save me…” 

Calvin jolted awake, sitting up abruptly, his chest heaving with quick, shallow breaths. He clenched the bedsheet so tightly that his knuckles went pale. 

The moonlight filtered through the window, spling across the floor and casting a soft glow on his pale face. He wiped the sweat from his forehead, his heart still pounding, as if the scene from his dream was still gripping him. 

At the same time, the sound of quick, uneven breaths came from Eugene’s room. 

He, too, had been startled awake by a dream. In it, Scarlett was battered and bruised, kneeling on the ground, her wrists bound by heavy iron chains. 

Tears streaked her face as she cried out in a ragged voice, “Eugene… It hurts so bad… Please, save me…“! 

Eugene sprang up in bed, his forehead slick with cold sweat, his hands clutching the mattress tightly, his knuckles turning white. He drew a deep breath, trying to calm his racing heart, but the vivid images from the dream stuck with him, driving into his heart like a blade. 

The two of them lay awake, tossing and turning, unable to find even a moment of rest the entire night. 

As the first light of dawn crept in, Eugene grabbed his phone to check the time and noticed a message from Scarlett that had come in the night before. 

“You wanted me to apologize, didn’t you? Well, I’ve recorded an apology video. You’ll get to watch the heartfelt apology I’ve made for Sharon right in the heart of downtown soon.” 

A sense of dread settled in his chest. Without hesitation, he dialed Calvin’s number. As soon as the call connected, their voices overlapped. 

“Let’s meet.”
