“Outside.”
“Who are you with?”
Dwayne glanced towards the direction of the carousel, stood up from the bench, took out a cigarette case, “to talk with
friend.”
“Talking about something? Is it about the children?”
He lit a cigarette, paused at the words, raised his eyelids, “What do you mean by that?”
Soniayn knew he was lying and chuckled, “Dwayne, were you at the amusement park with Sonia and another child? Didn’t you say that wasn’t your child? Are you lying to me?”
Dwayne’s face was uncertain, “Who told you?”
He accompanied Sonia and her son out, keeping their whereabouts secret.
Margaret was also present, but it wouldn’t be her who leaked it.
“You don’t worry about this,” Soniayn snapped, “Dwayne, I am not satisfied with Dorothy as a daughter–in–law, but I am even less likely to accept a woman like Sonia. Your father, and even your grandmother, would never agree!”
“If you want to divorce Dorothy, you’d better say it early. Dorothy is still young, only twenty–six years old. Are you going to make her wait until she’s forty or fifty before you’re willing to let go?”
Dwayne held up a metal lighter, lit a cigarette, and said, “When did I ever say I wanted a divorce.”
Soniayn rubbed her throbbing temples and said, “You have been keeping mistresses and illegitimate children outside, and you still don’t want a divorce? What you have done is even worse than your father! Do you think you can have your cake and eat it
too?”
“Dad is dad, I am me.”
Dwayne slowly exhaled smoke, looking obscure, “Brenden is not my child, but Sonia’s past experience was caused by me, it’s something I owe her.”
Soniayn took a deep breath and calmed down for a moment. “Yes, you owe her, you can sympathize with her, but don’t forget that you have a wife! Dorothy thinks this is your illegitimate child outside, have you ever thought about her feelings?”
Dwayne remained silent, smoking a cigarette. Under that calm exterior, there was a whirlpool that could engulfything.
“Dwayne,” Sonia said as she walked oyer with Brenden.
Dwayne hung up the phone and turned around.
Sonia suddenly noticed the tiny scab on his lip, perhaps because they were facing each other in the sunlight, otherwise she would have noticed it in the morning!
The scar, she was too familiar with it.
The man from before also liked to bite her, saying that as long as there were marks left behind, she belonged to him. So the thought of that perverted man made Sonia unable to stop being afraid.
Dwayne picked up Brenden and asked, “How come you’re back, are you tired?”
Brenden nodded, not daring to tell him that he actually didn’t dare to play too much, because his mom just wanted him to stick with Dwayne…
