Sylvia had a hunch that maybe the baby wasn't Rupert's. That's why she started asking Naomi about the men Bridget had been around lately. Unfortunately, she wasn't getting anywhere with her inquiries. But seeing how Bridget seemed constantly on edge, Sylvia's suspicions grew stronger.
Over the next four days, Bridget, despite her meticulously done makeup, would suddenly disappear for a bit. Sylvia noticed her slipping into the storage room and heard her muffled groans. It seemed like, according to the doctor, her attempt at a DIY solution had failed.
Bridget tried to hold out for two more days, but even her blush couldn't hide how pale she had become. She finally made up an excuse to go to the hospital. Sylvia, using the pretext of delivering something, decided to follow her.
Bridget went to see the doctor who had previously prescribed her the medication. To avoid drawing attention, she chose the quietest time of day, around lunch. But just before entering the office, she got a phone call that left her stunned.
"What did you say? Are you sure? I understand," Bridget said, seething as she hung up, glancing around nervously. Sylvia quickly ducked out of sight just in time to avoid being spotted. When she peeked around the corner again, Bridget had vanished.
Sylvia hurried to the doctor's office and pressed her ear against the door, hoping to catch any sound. But it was silent inside.
"Who's there?" a sudden voice startled Sylvia, nearly making her jump out of her skin. She quickly composed herself and turned to face a young nurse giving her a suspicious look.
"What are you doing here? The doctor isn't seeing patients at this hour," the nurse said.
The nurse nodded and closed the door. Sylvia, not wanting to linger, left with the nurse. As she walked away, she recalled the disarray in Dr. Lennon's office—a scattered stack of patient files, a scribbled note on a chart, and an uncapped pen. It looked like Dr. Lennon left in a real hurry.
Did Bridget find something out? Sylvia felt a weight in her chest, a sense that something big was about to happen. She took a deep breath and found a secluded bench, keeping an eye on the gynecology department.
As time passed, more people filled the waiting area, providing Sylvia with better cover. Then, she spotted a figure skulking through the crowd. It was Bridget, bundled up in her coat, walking quickly but unsteadily, looking even more fragile than before.
What happened to her? Sylvia wondered. She didn't follow Bridget immediately, worried about being spotted. Instead, she moved closer to Dr. Lennon's office, mingling with the patients waiting in line, keeping her head down and trying to blend in.
