Encore of the Avenging Muse (Sylvia and Rupert) novel Chapter 313

But right now, Sylvia had bigger things to worry about.

If she really wanted to go to the police, there’d be an injury report—she’d need to check what was still missing from her medical file.

She swung her legs out of bed, but the moment her feet hit the floor, her knees buckled like she was standing on marshmallows.

Gritting her teeth, she forced herself forward, step by shaky step, toward the doctor’s office.

She was halfway there when the office door slammed open so hard it nearly hit the wall.

Chris burst out, cell phone pressed to his ear, shouting, “Are you out of your damn mind? What the hell were you thinking?”

He was so worked up, he barreled right past Sylvia without even noticing her.

Watching him go, Sylvia remembered that guy who’d run from the locker room. There was something… familiar, and yet off.

Chris had just had his face shield smashed in by Rupert, and had crashed into a bunch of lockers. So why did he look perfectly fine now, like nothing had happened?

And why, if Rupert knew about Chris and Bridget’s affair, did he still trust Chris so much?

A million questions buzzed around Sylvia’s mind.

Ignoring how weak she felt, she pushed herself off the wall and followed Chris down the hall.

He headed straight into the ER.

Sylvia hovered outside the half-open door, peeking in.

There was a row of beds, each with someone laid out on it.

Chris made a beeline for the center bed and yanked the curtain aside.

He glared at the patient and let loose: “Are you nuts? Who the hell goes drag racing in the hills?”

Drag racing?

Sylvia’s heart skipped a beat.

But Chris was standing square in her line of sight—she couldn’t see who was on the bed.

A nurse hurried over, grabbing Chris by the arm.

“Dr. Chris, calm down! Caleb’s just got a hobby, you know? He was wearing protective gear. Aside from some fractured bones and a pretty bad cut on his face, it’s mostly scrapes and bruises.”

Relief flashed across Chris’s face, and he gave the person on the bed a gentle push.

“Sit up. Let me take a look at that cut on your face.”
