Chapter 297 Inquiring

“What are you thinking about?” My mother began, looking at me, “You, my child, always seem to be burdened with worries. I’m afraid. you’ll age before your time.”

I forced a laugh, looked at her, “Mom, you’re cursing me.”

She spat out twice, saying, “What nonsense, could your mother curse you? I’m just worried that you’re overthinking and exhausting yourself.”

I smiled faintly, unable to resist saying, “What could I possibly think.”

She sighed, “That’s good. Look at Marjorie, she’s in her thirties and still so radiant. When you have time, you should really learn from her about skincare. You’re only in your teens, but you look no different from her.”

I was left speechless by my mother’s words, not knowing whether to laugh or cry, “Mom, are you implying that your daughter is ugly or old?”

She was helpless, “What are you talking about? I’m just reminding you. What could I possibly dislike about you? You’ve been good-looking since you were little. Don’t I just hope that when you reach Marjorie’s age, you can still be as beautiful and slim as you are now?”

Caught off guard by my mother’s logic, I didn’t know what to say for a -moment. After some thought, I asked, “Did Marjorie get married?”

“No!” The mother shook her head, saying, “I heard she was married once before, but then she divorced. However, not long after the divorce, her ex-husband died.”

I paused for a moment, “Dead?”

Mother nodded, “Yes, she died of illness. Mia mentioned it to me briefly, but I didn’t ask about it. It’s not a good thing to gossip about others. Why are you suddenly interested in other people’s affairs? Aren’t you in a mess yourself right now?”

I held my forehead, she really knew how to poke at me. I nodded, helplessly saying, “You’re right, I was just gossiping a bit. I thought she and Alexander seemed to get along well, so I just gossiped a bit.”

She gave me a disdainful look, “Put away your messy thoughts. Alexander and Marjorie are not like that. They are just two kids who get along well and enjoy each other’s company. I think Marjorie only treats Alexander like a younger brother and takes care of him. Alexander just returned to the country and doesn’t have many friends around. It’s a good thing that he can make a few friends he can talk to. Don’t meddle in their affairs.”

My mother’s words really put me in an awkward position. I helplessly smiled and said, “Mom, I only said one thing, and you countered me with ten. Just a few days without seeing each other, and I’m no longer your daughter?”

She clicked her tongue and said, “How did this even get to you not being my daughter? If you’re not my daughter, then who is?”

I smirked, “Look, I’m almost not one of you anymore. I just wanted to ask about what happened in the mountains these past few days. But before I could even open my mouth, you’ve already shut me down.”

She gave me a helpless glance and said, “You’ve been beating around the bush just to ask me this?”

I shrugged, “Not really, I just wanted to show some concern for you.”

She squinted at me and said, “Why do I feel like you’re hiding
