Jonathan had some business to sort out at his company. After hanging up the phone, he returned to his room only to find Estelle missing from their suite.
He was slightly taken aback, about to call her, but then saw her phone on the table, the window open. Through the window, he spotted Estelle sitting under a tree in the yard.
She was wearing a blue and white striped long skirt, the sunlight filtering through the golden osmanthus leaves, casting shadows on her slender back. She seemed rather lonely.
A sense of unease crept into Jonathan's heart, and he hurried outside to find her.
Walking into the backyard, he saw Estelle feeding a bunny with some lettuce.
Hearing footsteps, she looked up and smiled at him.
Her bright and radiant smile made Jonathan feel like his earlier unease of not finding her in the room was just his imagination.
He sat down next to her. Another bunny hopped over to his feet, seemingly wanting some lettuce as well.
"These bunnies grow up so fast. Just a few months old, and they're already this big," Estelle said, chuckling.
Jonathan nodded.
Estelle let out a soft laugh, her eyes narrowing into slits, "These bunnies were raised by Courtney's son, be careful, or he might get mad."
Jonathan smiled and picked up a piece of lettuce from the basket to feed the bunny.
The bunnies were eating quite fast. Estelle watched them munching away happily and couldn't help but laugh.
"Did you come here to feed the bunnies after eating your fill?" Jonathan asked with a laugh.
Estelle was twirling a blade of grass in her fingers, her gaze distant, "I realized that liking someone doesn't need a reason. Even if she misbehaves, is hypocritical and nasty, the people who love her will still love her."
Jonathan's expression darkened, "Did someone from the Macclain family call you? Simone?"
Estelle looked at Jonathan in surprise, and his sharpness startled her.
"What did they want?" Jonathan asked, furrowing his brows.
"They want me to spare Carmella," Estelle answered.
Jonathan's brows furrowed even more, "And what did you say?"
Estelle closed her eyes, "I said I hope Carmella fulfills her death wish and never comes out of the ER."
A cold glint flashed in Jonathan's eyes, "Good for you."
It seemed the Macclain family hadn't learned their lesson yet.
He gently stroked Estelle's hair, "Don't get angry because of the Macclains. I'll make sure they never bother you again."
Estelle nodded, "No, I want to see Carmella destroy them herself."
Jonathan's hand slid down her shoulder, gently pulling her into his embrace, "Maybe the world owes you too much. That's why it sent me to you. It's okay. Even if everyone else doesn't love you, I always will."
Estelle leaned against his chest. Yes, as long as he loved her, that was enough.
Half a basket of lettuce was fed to the bunnies, but they were still eating non-stop.
"Do these bunnies not know when they're full?" Estelle asked, frowning.
Jonathan laughed, "Well, if they stuff themselves, we can have roast rabbit for dinner."
Estelle burst into laughter.
