Estelle looked up at him, "When did you plan all this?"
Jonathan replied, "The last time Simone indulged the Crawleys in hurting you, I had my people take a deep dive into the Macclains' affairs. Found out they were already on shaky ground, so the fall of the Macclain empire really had nothing to do with you!"
Estelle, still rattled by Terrence's earlier words but not one to dwell on things, nodded in agreement and put the matter to rest.
They arrived at Old Mr. Quintin's place, with snowflakes still gently falling. Sophia was already there, umbrella in hand, ready to walk Estelle inside.
Jonathan let go of Estelle's hand, "You go ahead. I need to make a quick call, and then I'll be right with you."
Estelle nodded, and she and Sophia made their way toward the warmth of the house.
Jonathan watched Estelle enter before he strode over to a nearby plum tree and dialed an international number, his tone grave, "Did you receive the medication I sent? Any issues?"
The voice on the other end was respectful, "I was just about to update you. The trial medication and the antidote pills have been analyzed. The antidote is effective and safe to continue taking."
"But why did it stop showing significant effects after the first three days?" Jonathan stood beneath the snowy branches, his expression cool and collected.
There was a brief silence, then the person pondered, "The subject has a strong will, resisted the control of the drug initially. Perhaps that same will is affecting the efficacy of the antidote. Maybe we should extend the duration of the antidote intake; it should work."
Jonathan pinched the bridge of his nose, his voice deepening, "I don't want to hear 'maybe' or 'should'."
That person quickly apologized, "Sorry, we will continue our research."
Jonathan grunted a response and hung up the phone.
The first three days Estelle was on the medication, the effects were clear: no more auditory hallucinations during the day, no more restless dreams at night. But then the effects vanished.
Estelle's words today weighed on him, her distracted thoughts and low spirits not just about the Macclains, but perhaps also due to the medication.
